Paediatric dentists receive training in sedation during their advanced education training, but evidence suggests that this training varies widely. ⋯ Paediatric dentists around the world use relatively few behaviour management techniques, including pharmacological management. There is a definite interest in continuing education in the area of sedation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of pre-emptive ibuprofen, paracetamol, and placebo administration in reducing post-operative pain in primary tooth extraction.
This study investigates preliminary investigations that a pre-emptive analgesia administration may reduce post-extraction pain. ⋯ Preoperative use of ibuprofen and paracetamol may provide a pre-emptive analgesic effect in paediatric patients who receive adequate analgesia during mandibular primary tooth extraction.

Number, length and end-rounding quality of bristles in manual child and adult toothbrushes.
The design of the bristles of a toothbrush can affect the overall efficacy of toothbrushing. ⋯ The variations observed in the number, length and end-rounding quality of the bristles indicate inherent shortcomings of a majority of the tested toothbrushes in plaque removal efficacy, along with the potential for irritation on the gums.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCan drawing be considered a projective measure for children's distress in paediatric dentistry?
Several tools have been developed for the measurement of emotional status of the child in paediatric dental clinics including nonverbal self-report techniques. Subjective methods like drawing and Child Drawing: Hospital (CD:H) score have recently been applied in hospitalized children. Studies, however, have not attempted to analyse children's drawings as an aid to investigate the subjective feelings of children in paediatric dental settings. ⋯ Drawing is a useful measure of children's emotional status in dental settings in a way that is easier, familiar and more enjoyable for the child patient.

ReviewPathologic paediatric conditions associated with a compromised airway.
The purpose was to describe pathologic paediatric conditions associated with airway compromise adversely affecting dental treatment with sedation and general anaesthesia. ⋯ Successful management of children and adolescents with a compromised airway begins with identification of the problem through a detailed medical history and physical examination. Due to the likely fragile nature of many of these patients, and possibility of concomitant medical conditions affecting airway management, dental treatment needs necessitating pharmacological management are best treated in a controlled setting such as the operating room, where a patent airway can be maintained.
