[Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) - recommendations for risk assessment, prophylaxis and therapy - results of an expert panel meeting].
The aim was to update recommendations concerning the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) for German speaking countries. ⋯ Given the impact of PONV on patient satisfaction and the availability of effective and safe measures to prevent and treat PONV, further efforts should be taken to actually implement present evidence in order to improve patient?s outcome following surgical procedures.

[Applications of ultrasound in the intensive care unit].
Ultrasonography has developed as an indispensable and highly versatil tool in the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients. Nowadays intensive care medicine without the use of ultrasound is hard to imagine. ⋯ This article focuses on special applications of ultrasound in the intensive care unit: echocardiography, transcranial Doppler sonography, abdominal ultrasonography and the imaging of pleura and lung. Furthermore, the use of ultrasound to guide interventions is discussed.

The ultrasound in regional anesthesia is gaining currency. Of fundamental importance for a successful blockade is not only the direct process. ⋯ The aim of this article is about the current state of knowledge on implementing instructions of the risk stratification, hygiene, choice of the needle, the training and the sequence concerning ultrasound regional anesthesia. There are pitfalls and presented important conditions for successful work with this method.

[Real-time ultrasound guided vascular access].
Central venous catheterization and arterial catheterization are common procedures performed perioperatively by anesthetists. The traditional technique of locating surface landmarks was used to assist in vascular access. In patients with anatomical variants or pathological vessel changes it could be difficult or impossible to succeed with this traditional approach. ⋯ Complications can be reduced and success improved. It is mandatory to offer an appropriate ultrasound training programs for physicians using this technique. This article summarizes the literature and describes a practical method of ultrasound-guided vascular access.
