Review[Abdominal compartment syndrome. A still underestimated problem?].
The abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a life threatening disorder in critically ill patients caused by rapidly decreasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) > 12 mm Hg, which may result in multiple organ dysfunctions with a possibly fatal outcome. Under various causes for the development of an ACS, pelvic trauma, volume resuscitation after severe hemorrhage and reperfusion after aortic aneurysm repair as well as intra-abdominal packing figure at the first place. An increased BMI is a risk factor for patients to suffer from ACS. ⋯ Timely diagnosis of ACS remains sometimes difficult in spite of clinical indicators such as increased airway pressure, hypoxia, oliguria, shock and acidosis. For the early recognition of intra-abdominal hypertension repetitive measurement of the intra-vesical pressure (> 20 mm Hg) can be helpful. Besides intensive care treatment with artificial ventilation, circulatory support with volume and catecholamines, the decision for a prompt abdominal decompression and open abdominal treatment is life-saving and can preserve further functional damage to vital organ systems.

Case Reports[Case report: severe polytrauma after traffic accident].
This case report describes the prehospital care of a person with severe polytrauma due to being jammed in a vehicle in a traffic accident. After understanding the forces involved in causing the trauma, the therapy of impaired vital functions is demonstrated with particular regard to time management. Use of a rescue helicopter allowed for minimizing the delay to initial treatment as well as the duration of transport.

Review[Anesthesia in pediatric neurosurgery].
Due to the complexity of neurosurgical and neuroradiologic interventions and diagnostic procedures in pediatric patients the anesthesiologist is particularly challenged. Anesthesiological management in neuropediatric interventions necessitates both profound knowledge of pediatric anesthesia and thorough understanding of neurological pathophysiology. This review describes in detail neuropediatric anesthesiology with an emphasis on airway management, intraoperative positioning, volume therapy and intraoperative monitoring.

[Hypothermia after cardiac arrest--daily trained clinical practice? A survey at northern Germany hospitals].
Hypothermia after out of hospital cardiac arrest should be clinical practice for years. But is it really meanwhile daily trained practice? A survey at northern German hospitals gives an answer to this question.
