Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Dimenhydrinate and metoclopramide for prevention of nausea and vomiting following septorhinoplasties in women].
Dimenhydrinate and metoclopramide are inexpensive antiemetic drugs. Metoclopramide, especially, has been studied extensively in the past, but there are no studies that used the combination of both drugs for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). ⋯ In females undergoing endonasal surgery under propofol-desflurane-remifentanil anaesthesia the incidence of PONV is about 40%. In this setting, both metoclopramide and dimenhydrinate were ineffective to reduce the incidence and the severity of PONV. The combination of both drugs revealed no additional synergistic effect.

Case Reports[Transverse myelopathy as a complication following long-term intrathecal application of morphine in chronic back pain].
Serious neurological complications following long-term intrathecal application of opiates have seldom been published. This report describes complications which developed three months after reimplantation of a spinal catheter for pain therapy. ⋯ A regression of these symptoms occurred only after explantation of the spinal catheter-pump-system. Possible reasons and consequences are discussed.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Intraoperative normothermia with partial warming of patients undergoing orthopedic procedures].
This study investigates if warming of the upper or lower half of the body preserves normothermia in patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery. Additionally, we compared the intraoperative tympanic membrane and urinary bladder temperatures of these patients. ⋯ This data suggests that active warming of the upper or lower half of the body during major orthopaedic surgery can preserve normothermia in all patients. During these surgical procedures the urinary bladder temperature was able to represent reliable core temperatures.

Biography Historical Article[In memory of August Bier (1861-1949)].
"A professor is a gentleman of different opinion" this striking and sarcastic remark, which the surgeon August Bier often quoted in his lectures, can be applied to the pioneer of the lumbar and intravenous local anesthesia himself. Bier, born in 1861, in many ways influenced surgery, anesthesia and general medicine with his contributions through the decades. A student of the Kieler surgeon Friedrich von Esmarch, he habilitated after only two years. 1899 he received a call to the university in Greifswald, went to Bonn University in 1903 and finally in 1907 became the successor of Ernst von Bergmann in the acclaimed Klinik in der Ziegelstrasse in Berlin. ⋯ He dies there in 1949 at the age or 88, respected world-wide as a bionomic thinker, surgeon and expert on forestry. In the following we wish to point out the lesser known aspects of the surgeon August Bier, who enriched our special field by introducing spinal and intravenous anesthesia into it at the turn of the century. It is not possible to acknowledge all of the achievements of this restlessly working, sometimes difficult surgeon, this scientist to whom always could be applied: "A professor is a gentleman of different opinion!"
