Observational StudyThe Effect of Transesophageal Echocardiography Probe Placement on Intracuff Pressure of an Endotracheal Tube in Infants and Children.
To evaluate the effects of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probe insertion on the endotracheal cuff pressure (CP). ⋯ Following a transient increase in CP with TEE probe insertion, the CP returned to baseline after the tip of the TEE probe was advanced into the stomach. There was no variation among age groups in the magnitude of the CP change during the study.

Observational StudyExtracorporeal Support During Bilateral Sequential Lung Transplantation in Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension: Risk Factors and Outcomes.
To identify preoperative predictors of extracorporeal support in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) undergoing bilateral sequential lung transplantation (LTx), and to examine outcomes associated with the use of extracorporeal support. ⋯ Severity of RV dysfunction, TR, RV dilatation, increasing oxygen requirement, and increasing mPAP showed significant associations with the need for extracorporeal support during LTX in patients with PH. Extracorporeal support was associated with increased length of stay and tracheostomy but not with mortality or other complications. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Associated Risk Factors and Complications in Vascular Surgery Patients Requiring Unplanned Postoperative Reintubation.
To determine the frequency of reintubation within 30 days in vascular surgery patients and the associated risk factors and complications. ⋯ Patients undergoing major vascular surgery represent a high-risk population for unplanned postoperative reintubation. Preoperative evaluation should include the consideration of the positively associated risk factors found in this study. Due to the significant morbidity associated with unplanned reintubation, additional work is needed to identify risk factors amenable to optimization in the preoperative period.

Comparative Study Observational StudyIntubated Versus Nonintubated General Anesthesia or Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery-A Case-Control Study.
General anesthesia with endobronchial intubation and one-lung positive-pressure ventilation always has been considered mandatory for thoracic surgery. Recently, there has been interest in nonintubated techniques for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in awake and sedated patients. The authors' center developed a nonintubated technique with spontaneous ventilation with the patient under general anesthesia using a supraglottic airway device. The authors believe that this was the first study to compare a nonintubated general anesthetic technique with an intubated general anesthetic technique for VATS. ⋯ A nonintubated general anesthetic technique is a feasible alternative to intubated general anesthesia for minor VATS procedures.
