Observational StudyIntraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and Right Ventricular Failure After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.
To determine whether intraoperative measures of right ventricular (RV) function using transesophageal echocardiography are associated with subsequent RV failure after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. ⋯ Intraoperative measures of RV function such as tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, tricuspid annular systolic velocity, and RV strain were not associated with RV failure after LVAD implantation. Decreased postbypass FAC was significantly associated with RV failure but showed poor discrimination.

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes Between General Anesthesiologists and Cardiac Anesthesiologists in the Management of Left Ventricular Assist Device Patients in Noncardiac Surgeries and Procedures.
To describe the authors' experience and comparative results after introducing noncardiac fellowship-trained anesthesiologists to a service previously managed by fellowship-trained cardiac anesthesiologists caring for left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients undergoing low-risk noncardiac procedures with anesthesia. ⋯ Patients with LVADs can be managed by either a noncardiac or a cardiac fellowship-trained anesthesiologist with similar technique and outcome during low-risk noncardiac procedures and surgeries.

Chronic Lung Disease and Mortality after Cardiac Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Study.
To investigate the 1-year survival in cardiac surgical patients with lung disease, including previously undiagnosed cases. ⋯ Combination of confirmed preexisting lung disease and newly diagnosed cases provides a clear link to mid-term mortality.

Intraoperative Renal Resistive Index as an Acute Kidney Injury Biomarker: Development and Validation of an Automated Analysis Algorithm.
Intraoperative Doppler-determined renal resistive index (RRI) is a promising early acute kidney injury (AKI) biomarker. As RRI continues to be studied, its clinical usefulness and robustness in research settings will be linked to the ease, efficiency, and precision with which it can be interpreted. Therefore, the authors assessed the usefulness of computer vision technology as an approach to developing an automated RRI-estimating algorithm with equivalent reliability and reproducibility to human experts. ⋯ The authors confirmed the value of computer vision technology to develop an algorithm for RRI estimation from automatically processed intraoperative renal Doppler waveforms. This simple-to-use and efficient tool further adds to the clinical and research value of RRI, already the "earliest" among several early AKI biomarkers being assessed.
