Infective Endocarditis Is a Risk Factor for Heparin Resistance in Adult Cardiovascular Surgical Procedures: A Retrospective Study.
Heparin resistance (HR), defined as a decrease in heparin responsiveness, can result in adverse events with prolonged duration of surgery. Although some clinical risk factors have been suggested, the relationship with the surgical diagnosis is unclear. The aim of present study was to elucidate the clinical predictors of HR including the surgical diagnosis. ⋯ Infective endocarditis and preoperative hypoalbuminemia were associated independently with HR. The optimal anticoagulation strategy for patients with these risk factors requires further investigations based on the authors' findings.

The Ability of Carbon Dioxide-Derived Indices to Predict Adverse Outcome After Cardiac Surgery.
The objective of this study was to assess whether the central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide partial-pressure difference (ΔPCO2) and the ratio of the ΔPCO2 to the arterial-venous difference in oxygen content (ΔPCO2/Ca-vO2) predict postoperative complications (PC) after cardiac surgery. ⋯ The ΔPCO2 and the ΔPCO2/Ca-vO2 ratio predict the occurrence of complications in cardiac surgery.

Risk Factors of Midterm Mortality After Aortic Valve Replacement for Severe Calcified Tricuspid Aortic Valve Stenosis: A retrospective analysis of Perioperative Events Assessment in Adult Cardiac surgery (PESSAC) Registry.
The European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (EuroSCORE II) initially developed for predicting early postoperative mortality of all types of cardiac surgery, is less able to predict, more specifically, long-term outcomes after aortic valve replacement (AVR). The study authors here evaluated the risk factors for three-year mortality after isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR) for severe calcified tricuspid aortic valve stenosis and compared them with EuroSCORE II to predict long-term outcomes. ⋯ The study authors identified six independent risk factors for three-year mortality after isolated AVR. The logistic regression model had relatively modest predictive performance for three-year mortality.
