Meta AnalysisEvaluating the Impact of Cardiopulmonary Bypass Priming Fluids on Bleeding After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) predisposes young children to coagulopathy. The authors evaluated possible effects of CPB priming fluids on perioperative bleeding in pediatric cardiac surgery. ⋯ This systematic review of current evidence did not show an effect of different CPB priming solutions on 24-hour blood loss. The analysis was limited by heterogeneity within the dataset regarding population, type of intervention, dosing, and the chosen comparator, compromising any conclusions.

ReviewA Review of Physiologic Considerations and Challenges in Pediatric Patients With Failing Single- Ventricle Physiology Undergoing Ventricular Assist Device Placement.
Advances in surgical techniques and outpatient cardiac care have led to a growing population of pediatric patients surviving well into adulthood with previous single-ventricle palliation. Continued improvement in survival has resulted in subsequent increases in the number of patients with single-ventricle physiology listed for heart transplantations. ⋯ Only limited published data exist describing the perioperative anesthetic management and key considerations dedicated to patients with failing single-ventricle physiology presenting for ventricular assist devices. This clinical review aims to provide a focused evaluation of the vital perioperative considerations encountered in this novel population.

Multicenter StudyGender and the Outcome of Postcardiotomy Veno-arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
There is a paucity of sex-specific data on patients' postcardiotomy venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). The present study sought to assess this issue in a multicenter study. ⋯ In postcardiotomy VA-ECMO, female patients demonstrated higher hospital mortality than men. Morbidity and late mortality were similar between the two groups.

How Should ECMO Be Used Under Conditions of Severe Scarcity? A Population Study of Public Perception.
To assess societal preferences regarding allocation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a rescue option for select patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). ⋯ Even though participants expressed hesitation regarding ECMO in personal circumstances, they were uniformly in support of using ECMO to treat COVID patients at a policy level for others who might need it, even in the setting of severe scarcity.
