Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of six months of vitamin D supplementation in patients with heart failure: a randomized double-blind controlled trial.
Low plasma vitamin D levels have been associated with heart failure (HF). This research attempts to explain the role of vitamin D supplementation on myocardial function in elderly patients with HF. ⋯ Six months of vitamin D supplementation significantly improves EF in elderly patients with HF and vitamin D deficiency.

Prediction of cardiovascular disease by abdominal obesity measures is dependent on body weight and sex--results from two community based cohort studies.
To study waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist circumference (WC), sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), and waist-hip-height ratio (WHHR) as predictors of CVD, in men and women stratified by BMI (cut-off ≥25). ⋯ In normal weight individuals, WHHR and WHR were the best predictors in women, whereas SAD was the only independent predictor in men. Among overweight/obese individuals all measures failed to predict CVD in women, whereas WHHR was the strongest predictor after adjustments for CVD risk factors in men.

Identifying the threshold for vitamin D insufficiency in relation to cardiometabolic markers.
To determine the association between vitamin D status and cardiometabolic indicators, and to determine the vitamin threshold that affects these parameters. ⋯ Vitamin D status is related to cardiometabolic indicators in healthy men. We suggest a 25(OH)D threshold of 11-14 ng/ml for these outcomes. Future studies are required to address temporal relationships and the impact of vitamin D supplementation.

Review Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis of 14 trials comparing bypass grafting vs drug-eluting stents in diabetic patients with multivessel coronary artery disease.
Clinical trials have reported lower mortality and repeated revascularization rate in diabetic patients treated with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as compared to percutaneous revascularization. However, these studies were conducted in the era of bare-metal stents. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to compare CABG to PCI with drug-eluting stents (DES) in diabetic patients with multivessel and/or left main disease. ⋯ The present meta-analysis demonstrates that among diabetic patients with multivessel disease and/or left main disease, CABG provides benefits in mortality and TVR, especially in high-risk patients but it is counterbalanced by a higher risk of stroke. Future trials are certainly needed in the era of new DES and improved antiplatelet therapies.

Multicenter StudyA quantitative measure of diabetes risk in community practice impacts clinical decisions: the PREVAIL initiative.
While predictive tools are being developed to identify those at highest risk for developing diabetes, little is known whether these assays affect clinical care. ⋯ The use of a prognostic test in patients perceived to be high risk for diabetes was associated with a modest but significant increase in the prescription of metformin and lifestyle interventions and a reduction in BMI.
