A comparison of body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio as indicators of hypertension risk in an urban Argentine population: a hospital-based study.
To examine the relationship between 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and three commonest anthropometric measurements for obesity [body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR)] in patients with essential hypertension never treated or after a 3 week placebo period, living in Buenos Aires. ⋯ These results indicated a high prevalence of overweight-obesity (more than 56% of women and 75% of men) in our hospital-based sample of essential hypertension and that the WHR offers additional information beyond BMI and WC to predict the hypertension risk according to the ABPM.

Role of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid on hyperhomocysteinemia in a Pakistani population of patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Pakistani people belong to an ethnic group which has the highest rate of coronary artery disease (CAD). We investigated the possible correlation between deficiency of vitamins B6, B12 or folic acid and hyperhomocysteinemia in Pakistani patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). A case-control study was carried out involving 224 AMI patients (age 30-70 years; 55 females and 169 males) and 126 normal healthy subjects (age 31-70 years; 35 females and 91 males). ⋯ Substantial nutritional deficiencies of these three vitamins along with mild hyperhomocysteinemia, perhaps through an interplay with the classical cardiovascular risk factors (highly prevalent in this population), could be further aggravating the risk of CAD in the Pakistani population.

Citizens and family doctors facing awareness and management of traditional cardiovascular risk factors: results from the Global Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Project (Help Your Heart Stay Young Study).
The numerous guidelines and multiple approaches to managing cardiovascular risk factors have reduced the number of fatal events but not the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One rarely explored aspect is the extent to which individuals perceive their own risk in relation to their education and history of CVD. Furthermore, Italy has a State-based Health System, in which family doctors (FDs) may be an extremely useful and relatively low cost resource for risk management, but the degree of their involvement in individual CVD risk management has not been previously assessed. ⋯ The results of our study suggest that the awareness of CVD risk among subjects is somewhat vague. The FDs were generally able to provide a quantitative assessment of CVD risk in their patients. CVD risk prevention programmes may be more successful if they stress knowledge and awareness in the population, and stimulate FDs to undertake more stringent quantitative assessments of CVD risk factors.

Is there a relationship between left ventricular mass and plasma glucose and lipids independent of body mass index? Results of the Gubbio Study.
The association between left ventricular (LV) mass (M) and variables described as features of the insulin resistance syndrome, such as obesity and measures o lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms, has been reported in hypertensives. The aim of the present study was to investigate in a large, population based group of non hypertensive people, the prevalence of LV hypertrophy (H) and the relationship of LVM with some of the variables described in the insulin resistance syndrome, independently of obesity. For this reason we investigated the normotensive subjects in the age range 45-54 yrs (n = 435) of the total population of participants in the Gubbio Population Study. ⋯ The present study in the middle age normotensive sample of the general population of Gubbio extends to normotensives the relationship between left ventricular mass and metabolic parameters already seen in hypertensives. BMI seems to account for most of the increases in LVM since the prevalence of LVH, which was definitely high when LVM was not normalized to body weight, fell to approximately 4% when the influence of body weight was excluded. Moreover differences in metabolic values between subjects with and without LVH disappeared when the subjects were stratified by BMI. Left ventricular geometry, on the other hand, seems to be related to some metabolic variables.
