Multicenter StudyThe relative burden of diabetes complications on healthcare costs: The population-based CINECA-SID ARNO Diabetes Observatory.
In the present population-based study, we aimed to describe the per patient annual healthcare cost of people with diabetes in 2007-2012, to assess the relative burden of diabetes complications and other potential determinants on healthcare costs in the 2012 cohort, and to describe and analyse the determinants of the cost of incident cases diagnosed in 2012. ⋯ The present study provides evidence on the excess of healthcare costs due to diabetes complications in both prevalent and incident cases.

Comparative StudySerum 25-hydroxyvitamin D predicts early recurrent stroke in ischemic stroke patients.
This study was conducted to determine 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] levels in serum, and to investigate their associations with stroke recurrence events in a 3-month follow-up study in Chinese patients with first-ever ischemic stroke. ⋯ Our findings suggest that reduced serum levels of 25(OH) D can predict the risk of early stroke recurrence in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke.

Serum β-cryptoxanthin and β-carotene derived from Satsuma mandarin and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity: The Mikkabi cohort study.
Findings of observational studies suggest cardioprotective effects of antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids. However, recent meta-analyses failed to show the beneficial effects of supplemental intake of antioxidants on cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to assess the association between CVD risk and β-cryptoxanthin in Japan, where Satsuma mandarin, a major source of β-cryptoxanthin, is widely consumed. ⋯ This study indicated that β-cryptoxanthin and β-carotene derived from Satsuma mandarin are candidate micronutrients for preventing arteriosclerosis development. Further longitudinal and interventional studies will be required to validate the effect on CVD.

ReviewThe role of global and regional DNA methylation and histone modifications in glycemic traits and type 2 diabetes: A systematic review.
New evidence suggests the potential involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in type 2 diabetes (T2D) as a crucial interface between the effects of genetic predisposition and environmental influences. ⋯ Current evidence supports an association between epigenetic marks and T2D. However, overall evidence is limited, highlighting the need for further larger-scale and prospective investigations to establish whether epigenetic marks may influence the risk of developing T2D.

Comparative StudySerum uric acid levels during dual antiplatelet therapy with ticagrelor or clopidogrel: Results from a single-centre study.
New antithrombotic therapies have significantly improved the outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), where the introduction of ticagrelor has provided the greatest mortality benefits. However, ticagrelor treatment has been associated with a potential increase in the serum uric acid (SUA) levels, which may influence endothelial dysfunction and prothrombotic status, thereby affecting the risk of acute cardiovascular events in patients requiring dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). The present study aimed to compare the impact of antiplatelet agents such as ticagrelor or clopidogrel on SUA levels and their effect on platelet reactivity. ⋯ An increase in the SUA levels at 30-90 days was observed in patients receiving chronic DAPT with ticagrelor, but not clopidogrel treatment. However, the changes in the SUA levels do not influence platelet aggregation.
