Comparative StudyInterleukin-6 and its mRNA responses in exercise and recovery: relationship to muscle glycogen.
Increases in circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) during exhaustive exercise have been suggested to be related to declining muscle glycogen. We addressed two hypotheses: (a) exhaustive exercise on two occasions will result in similar decreases in glycogen and increases in circulating IL-6 and its muscle mRNA; (b) increasing the rate of glycogen restoration via high-carbohydrate feeding in recovery will be associated with more rapid declines in muscle mRNA and circulating IL-6. Ten male subjects (22.6+/-0.8 year) cycled to exhaustion (65% VO(2 max)) on two occasions (117.8+/-2.9 min). ⋯ The decline in glycogen was not correlated with the increase in IL-6 or IL-6 mRNA. During recovery, circulating IL-6 and its muscle mRNA decreased similarly in both trials; however, glycogen increased 150% (P<0.05) and 40% in the carbohydrate and water trials, respectively. Therefore, the declining IL-6 mRNA and IL-6 plasma concentrations during recovery were not related to carbohydrate availability or changes in glycogen.

Several authors have analyzed the incidence of handball injuries in amateur players but information of handball injury in top-level players is very limited. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence, circumstances and characteristics of handball injuries during major international tournaments. ⋯ Preventive program proven effective should be implemented. Fair Play is an essential aspect of injury prevention. Therefore, close cooperation with the referees is also necessary to make handball a safer sport.

Case ReportsTotal proximal tendon avulsion of the rectus femoris muscle.
Total proximal avulsions of the quadriceps femoris muscle group are rare injuries. Between the years 2001 and 2004 five patients with a total proximal avulsion of the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle were treated surgically in Mehiläinen Hospital in Turku, Finland. The median age of the patients was 21 years (range, 19-27) and the patients were all men. ⋯ All of the patients were able to return to their pre-injury level of activity 5-10 months after surgery. The median follow-up time was 20 months (range, 9-38). Surgical treatment of a total proximal avulsion of the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle seems to result in return to the pre-injury activity level in most cases.

Operative treatment of stress fractures of the proximal second metatarsal.
Proximal stress fractures of the second metatarsal are rare. They have been reported mainly in classical ballet dancers. Non-operative treatment has usually led to good results and rapid return to full activities. ⋯ The patients were followed for an average of 38 months. All except one of the patients were able to return to their prior level of activity within 4-6 months. In conclusion if non-operative treatment fails surgery seems to give good results in most patients with a stress fracture of the proximal second metatarsal.

Relationships between postural balance, rifle stability and shooting accuracy among novice rifle shooters.
The present study examined the relationships between shooting accuracy and shooters' behavioral performance, i.e., postural balance and gun barrel stability, among novice rifle shooters in intra- and inter-individual levels. Postural balance and rifle stability were assessed in terms of anteroposterior (VEL(AP)) and mediolateral (VEL(ML)) sway velocity of the movement of center of pressure, and horizontal (DEV(H)) and vertical (DEV(V)) deviation of the aiming point. The participants (n=58) performed 30 shots in the standing position at a distance of 10 m from the target. ⋯ The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the VEL(ML) and the DEV(H) as independent variables accounted for 26% of the variance in the shooting score. The results also suggested that postural balance is related to the shooting accuracy both directly and indirectly through rifle stability. As the role of postural balance appeared to be important in shooting performance, the use of additional balance training programs to improve a shooter's postural skills should be encouraged.
