Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α dependent pathways mediate the renoprotective role of acetazolamide against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major complication of kidney transplantation, resulting in early graft dysfunction. Since diuretic acetazolamide (AZA) has been shown to improve contrast induced AKI, we hypothesized that AZA also protected against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) caused AKI. ⋯ The present study demonstrated that AZA exerted a renoprotective role against I/R induced AKI through activating HIF-1α and downstream pathways.

Isoflurane preconditioning increases survival of rat skin random-pattern flaps by induction of HIF-1α expression.
Survival of random-pattern skin flaps is important for the success of plastic and reconstructive surgeries. This study investigates isoflurane-induced protection against ischemia of skin flap and the underlying molecular mechanism in this process. ⋯ Isoflurane preconditioning improves survival of skin flaps by up the regulation of HIF-1α expression via Akt-mTOR and Akt-GSK 3β signaling pathways.

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system gene polymorphisms and coronary artery disease: detection of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.
The objective of this study was to explore the association between coronary artery disease and genetic polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway. In addition, we examined the interactions between demographic and lifestyle risk factors (environmental factors including age, sex, smoking status, alcohol intake) and RAAS polymorphisms on disease risk. ⋯ Subjects who carried the G allele of the rs1799998 polymorphism significantly associated with coronary heart disease and severity of coronary atherosclerosis estimated by the Gensini score in the whole population of the study. And, multiple RAAS gene polymorphisms are associated with coronary artery disease. The interaction of the CYP11B2 -344C→T polymorphism (rs1799998), age, and smoking status is also associated with enhanced risk of coronary artery disease.

Randomized Controlled TrialMitochondrial molecular basis of sevoflurane and propofol cardioprotection in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement with cardiopulmonary bypass.
Study elucidates and compares the mitochondrial bioenergetic-related molecular basis of sevoflurane and propofol cardioprotection during aortic valve replacement surgery due to aortic valve stenosis. ⋯ Our data indicate that sevoflurane and propofol lead to cardiac protection via different mitochondrially related molecular mechanisms. It appears that sevoflurane acts regulating cytochrome c oxidase and ATP synthase, while the effects of propofol occur through regulation of cytochrome c, Cx43, mtDNA transcription and UCP2.

Furanodiene, a natural product, inhibits breast cancer growth both in vitro and in vivo.
Previous studies have reported that the Curcuma wenyujin Y.H. Chen et C. Ling extract, which has a high furanodiene content, showed anti-cancer effects in breast cancer cells in vitro. The present study was designed to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity of furanodiene. ⋯ Taken together, we concluded that furanodiene suppresses breast cancer cell growth both in vitro and in vivo and could be a new lead compound for breast cancer chemotherapy.
