Low back pain in young elite field hockey players, football players and speed skaters: Prevalence and risk factors.
Low back pain (LBP) hampers performance and experiencing an episode of LBP is strongly associated with recurrent episodes. ⋯ Prevalence of LBP among young elite athletes compared to the general age-related population was 3–5 times higher. Sport-related risk factors of LBP were found in field hockey and in speed skating.

Functional performance and plasma cytokine levels in elderly women with and without low back pain.
Low back pain (LBP) is a complaint of great importance among the elderly due to its significant impact on function. LBP could contribute to changes in the regulatory process of inflammatory mediators observed in elders. The aim of this study was to compare plasma levels of interleukin(IL)-6, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 1(sTNF-R1), and functionality among 3 groups of elderly women: GI, with LBP; GII, without LBP but reports of other pain; and GIII, without any reported pain. ⋯ Elderly women with LBP had the highest sTNF-R1 plasma levels and the worst functional performance compared to elderly women with reports of other pain (not LBP) or no pain.

The effectiveness of transforaminal epidural steroid injection in patients with radicular low back pain due to lumbar disc herniation two years after treatment.
The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of transforaminal epidural steroid injection in patients with chronic low back pain and radicular leg pain due to lumbar disc herniation. ⋯ There was negative correlation between the duration of treatment effect and the duration of pre-treatment symptoms. Additionally, clinical improvement of radicular low back pain increased significantly as the duration of pre-treatment symptoms decreased. Based on the present findings, we think that transforaminal epidural steroid injections can be used as an alternative treatment for managing chronic radicular low back pain.

Quantitative MRI and X-ray analysis of disc degeneration and paraspinal muscle changes in degenerative spondylolisthesis.
The intervertebral disc degeneration changes and paraspinal muscles changes are believed to be risk factors for lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS). But there is limited quantitative information about this progression. This study is to reveal their changes the in the progression of LDS. ⋯ Decreased anterior disc height and multifidus muscle atrophy are found in the LDS patients and thy could be the cause of LDS. The presence of erector spinae hypertrophy could be a compensatory mechanism to compensate for the instability.

Ultrasound assessment of trunk muscles and back flexibility, strength and endurance in off-road cyclists with and without low back pain.
To compare the thickness of lateral abdominal muscles and Cross Sectional Area (CSA) of lumbar Multifidus Spinae (LM) muscles of competitive off-road cyclists with and without Low Back Pain (LBP). We also aimed to compare the maximum isometric back strength and endurance, as well as flexibility of lower back in cyclists with LBP and in the controls. ⋯ In this study, useful information regarding possible factors associated with low back pain in off- road cyclists was found (lower thickness of TrA and LM muscles and decreased back endurance).
