[Estimation of the Palliative Care Needs and the Extent of Coverage by Specialized Outpatient Palliative Care Teams in Selected Regions of Westphalia-Lippe].
Data to estimate the palliative care needs and its outpatient coverage are of public health interest. ⋯ One in 5 individuals has a need for palliative care before death. In statistical terms, more than 50% of tumor patients were cared for by regional palliative home care teams in the cities of Bochum and Muenster and the rural district of Coesfeld. By contrast, the degree of palliative care was less than 20% in the rural district of Borken.

[Public Health Research in Germany: A Appraisal - Plenary Lecture of the Forum Future Public Health, Berlin 2016].
Public health research incorporates many domains and has an interdisciplinary structure, which allows it to take on a leadership role in improving population health. In particular, the methodological expertise and applied approaches in this field should be used more often to allow translational science concepts to go beyond the patient bedside back to the population setting. New methods of data collection and the development of concepts to achieve more precise interventions require innovative contributions from experts in public health research. With the use of innovative methods of public health research, improvements in population health can be achieved, including all sections of the population.

[The Evaluation of the German Federal Law of Equal Treatment of Disabled Persons].
The German federal law of equal treatment of disabled persons (Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz des Bundes, BGG) came into effect in 2002. An evaluation of this law was required by the national plan of action for the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Project evaluation objectives were to estimate whether the needs of disabled persons were being met and whether the instruments proved to be adequate for fulfilling the aims of the law. ⋯ Its impact, however, was assessed as positive. Results also indicate that there might be some shortcomings with regard to accessibility. For a closer examination, however, more data focusing on accessibility in the context of health care and rehabilitation is.

[Development and Periodicity of Human Exposures in Suicidal Intention Reported to the Centre Erfurt from 2004-2013].
Aim of the Study: Exposures in suicide attempts are demanding for hospitals and poisons information centres (PICs). Therefore, the time characteristics of their frequency were studied. Methods: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of all human exposures reported to Centre Erfurt from the beginning of 2004 to the end of 2013 according to their frequency in the respective year, season, month, weekday, time of the weekday, circumstances of exposure, age and gender. ⋯ The median of age was 39 years (first quartile 24 years, third quartile 50 years). The female proportion was almost twice as high as the male. Conclusions: Hospitals the Centre Erfurt is serving should be particularly prepared for exposures in suicide attempts in the spring and summer (especially in July and August), at the beginning of the week and shortly before midnight.
