Recovery from end-stage organ failure presents a challenge for the medical community, considering the limitations of extracorporeal assist devices and the shortage of donors when organ replacement is needed. There is a need for new methods to promote recovery from organ failure and regenerative medicine is an option that should be considered. ⋯ In this context, the concept of decellularization technology has been applied to produce whole organ-derived scaffolds by removing cellular content while retaining all the necessary vascular and structural cues of the native organ. In this review, we focus on organ decellularization as a new regenerative medicine approach for whole organs, which may be applied in the field of digestive surgery.

Enhanced recovery in the management of mild gallstone pancreatitis: a prospective cohort study.
The aim of this study was to establish enhanced recovery protocols for the management of mild gallstone pancreatitis. ⋯ The implementation of enhanced recovery protocols is feasible in the management of mild gallstone pancreatitis. The utilization of these protocols can achieve shorter hospital stays and reduced costs, with no increase in either the re-admission or peri-operative complication rates.

Extraperitoneal colostomy in laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection using a laparoscopic retractor.
Although extraperitoneal colostomy is often performed to prevent postoperative parastomal hernia formation following an open abdominoperineal resection of lower rectal cancer, it has not been widely employed laparoscopically because of the difficulty associated with the extraperitoneal route. This paper describes a laparoscopic extraperitoneal sigmoid colostomy using the Endo Retract™ Maxi instrument. This surgical technique is easy, and helps to prevent the development of parastomal hernias.

Case Reports
Successful lung autotransplantation for central non-small-cell lung cancer: report of a case.
Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) confined to the lung is generally treated by surgical resection. The extent of resection is determined by the location of the tumor and the patient's pulmonary function. This report presents a successful lung autotransplantation in a man with NSCLC that could not tolerate pneumonectomy or sleeve lobectomy. ⋯ The isolated lower lobe was reimplanted by anastomosis of the bronchus, pulmonary artery, and vein. The patient was cancer-free 1 year after the surgery. Lung autotransplantation can therefore be successfully performed for selected patients with central NSCLC.

No consensus has been reached to define gastrointestinal failure (GIF) associated with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Reintam and colleagues proposed a scoring system of GIF for critically ill patients, but its suitability for patients with SAP is questionable. The present study evaluates a modified GIF score we developed to assess the GIF of patients with SAP. ⋯ The modified GIF score is useful for assessing gastrointestinal system function, which may serve as an early prognostic tool to evaluate the severity and predict the outcomes of SAP.
