We evaluated the long-term outcomes of clinical stage IA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) who underwent lobectomy. ⋯ CPFE is a significantly unfavorable prognostic factor after lobectomy, even in early-stage NSCLC patients with a preserved lung function.

This study aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes and clinical safety of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) when performed by trainee surgeons with little prior experience in performing open gastrectomy, under the guidance of trainer surgeons. ⋯ The study findings suggest that, under the guidance of trainer surgeons, trainee surgeons with little experience with open gastrectomy and even without prior experience with LDG can perform radical surgeries safely.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Phase III trial comparing UFT + PSK to UFT + LV in stage IIB, III colorectal cancer (MCSGO-CCTG).
Oral adjuvant uracil and tegafur plus leucovorin (UFT/LV) is not inferior to standard weekly fluorouracil and folinate for stage II/III colon cancer. However, protein-bound polysaccharide K (PSK) has been evaluated as postoperative adjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer. This report is the first of MCSGO-CCTG, which compared UFT/LV to UFT/PSK as adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIB or III colorectal cancer in patients who had undergone Japanese D2/D3 lymph node dissection. ⋯ As adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIB and III colorectal cancer patients, UFT/PSK adjuvant therapy was not non-inferior to UFT/LV therapy with respect to the DFS.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the major complications in patients who undergo distal pancreatectomy (DP). Recently, dividing the pancreas by stapler is a commonly performed technique, however, POPF still occurs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for POPF after DP using a triple-row stapler. ⋯ BMI and age were found to be significant risk factors for POPF after DP using a triple-row stapler.

Comparative Study
Surgery or stereotactic body radiotherapy for elderly stage I lung cancer? A propensity score matching analysis.
The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of surgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for elderly clinical stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. ⋯ The outcomes of surgery and SBRT for elderly patients with the early stage NSCLC were roughly the same.
