Meta AnalysisDiabetes mellitus, blood glucose and the risk of atrial fibrillation: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.
Diabetes and elevated blood glucose have been associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation in a number of epidemiological studies, however, the findings have not been entirely consistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the association. ⋯ This meta-analysis suggest that prediabetes and diabetes increase the risk of atrial fibrillation by 20% and 28%, respectively, and there is a dose-response relationship between increasing blood glucose and atrial fibrillation. Any further studies should clarify whether the association between diabetes and blood glucose and atrial fibrillation is independent of adiposity.

Meta AnalysisIncretin-based therapy in type 2 diabetes: An evidence based systematic review and meta-analysis.
Incretin based therapies such as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1Ra) are increasingly used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. In clinical practice and in previously performed clinical trials, these agents are often used in combination with other oral anti-diabetic agents (OADs) and Insulin. Prior meta-analytic reviews however do not adequately address the impact of background therapy and active comparator arms. ⋯ GLP-1Ra were more effective than DPP-4i in glycemia lowering. Long acting GLP-1Ra were more effective in HbA1c lowering than short-acting agents but with similar weight loss effect. The effect of DPP-4i incretin glycemic efficacy was not modified by background therapy used in the study.

Randomized Controlled TrialClinical and metabolic response to flaxseed oil omega-3 fatty acids supplementation in patients with diabetic foot ulcer: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
Data on the effects of flaxseed oil omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on wound healing and metabolic status in subjects with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) are scarce. ⋯ Overall, omega-3 fatty acids supplementation for 12weeks among subjects with DFU had beneficial effects on parameters of ulcer size, markers of insulin metabolism, serum hs-CRP, plasma TAC and GSH levels. In addition, flaxseed oil omega-3 fatty acids may have played an indirect role in wound healing due to its effects on improved metabolic profiles.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyA decade-long telemedicine screening program for diabetic retinopathy in the north-east of Italy.
To describe a decade long telemedicine screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the metropolitan area of Padova (North-East Italy) and to report about prevalence/incidence of DR and maculopathy, rate of progression to STDR and optimal screening interval in patients with no DR at first examination. ⋯ Screening every 2.5-year in patients without DR at the first examination seems to be adequate. Duration of disease is a relevant risk factor for progression to STDR, however patients with type 1 DM and duration <10years have greater incidence of STDR than patients with type 2 DM and similar disease duration. Epidemiologic data from this decade-long screening program in the North East of Italy may serve for implementing a national screening program.

Efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes and concomitant heart failure.
We investigated the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and heart failure (HF). ⋯ Dapagliflozin produced clinically meaningful reductions in HbA1c, weight, and SBP in patients with T2DM and HF, and was well tolerated.
