Nerve growth factor rescues diabetic mice heart after ischemia/reperfusion injury via up-regulation of the TRPV1 receptor.
Nerve growth factor (NGF), a member of the neurotrophin family, plays an essential role in diabetic neuropathy and ischemic heart disease. In the present study, we explored the potential role of NGF and the involvement of TRPV1 receptor in isolated diabetic mouse hearts following ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. ⋯ The NGF-induced up-regulation of TRPV1 via the increased synthesis and release of endogenous CGRP leads to improved cardiac performance in I/R-injured diabetic heart.

Comparative Study Observational StudyHealthcare utilization and costs in diabetes relative to the clinical spectrum of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) accompanied by painful symptoms is known as painful DPN (pDPN). This study characterized healthcare resource utilization and costs in patients with DPN, pDPN, and severe pDPN relative to diabetes only. ⋯ Patients with DPN, pDPN, and severe pDPN had significantly greater healthcare resource utilization and costs than patients with diabetes only, with the highest burden associated with severe pDPN.

Diabetes mellitus and infection: an evaluation of hospital utilization and management costs in the United States.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the number of diabetics that seek medical treatment in emergency departments or require hospitalization for infection management in the United States. This study also assesses the socioeconomic impact of inpatient infection management among diabetics. ⋯ Diabetics commonly present to the emergency department and require hospitalization for infection management. The care provided to diabetics for infection management has a large economic impact on the United States healthcare system. More efforts are needed to develop cost-effective strategies for the prevention of infection in patients with diabetes.

Association of advanced glycation end products and chronic kidney disease with macroangiopathy in type 2 diabetes.
Accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), may explain the major contribution of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) related to their impaired renal function. The aim of this study was to analyze the factors associated with AGE assessed by skin autofluorescence and their association with macroangiopathy in T2D. ⋯ Accumulation of AGEs is independently associated with renal insufficiency and macroangiopathy in patients with T2D.

ReviewFrom guideline to patient: a review of recent recommendations for pharmacotherapy of painful diabetic neuropathy.
Painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus, affecting, by some estimates, up to one quarter of diabetic patients. Since 2010, no fewer than 5 major international treatment guidelines for painful DPN have been issued, and there are meaningful differences among them. Duloxetine, pregabalin, gabapentin, and tricyclic antidepressants are the mainstays of treatment, but the choice of which class or agent to use in any given patient should be informed by patient characteristics. This review seeks to describe the differences among the recently issued guidelines, to assess the evidence on which they are based, and to offer insight into the most appropriate treatment choices based on patient characteristics.
