"Improved team communication" is broadly advocated in the discourse on safety but rarely supported by a precise understanding of the relationship between specific communication practices and concrete improvements in collaborative work processes. We sought to improve such understanding by analyzing the discourse arising from structured preoperative team briefings among surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists prior to general surgery procedures. ⋯ The crux of the model is an elaboration of the causal pathway between a specific communication practice (the team briefing), intermediary processes such as enhanced knowledge and purposeful action, and the quality and safety of collaborative care processes. Modeling this pathway is a critical step in promoting change, as it renders visible both the latent dangers present in current team communication systems and the specific ways in which altered communication patterns can impact team awareness and behaviors.

Surgery depends on interprofessional teamwork, which is becoming increasingly specialized. If surgery is to become a highly reliable system, it must adapt and professionals must learn from, and share, tested models of interprofessional teamwork. Trainers also need valid measures of teamwork to assess individual and team performance. ⋯ This paper addresses the complexity of measuring interprofessional teamwork in the operating theatre. It focuses mainly on the design and properties of observational assessment tools. The report and analysis serves to inform the researcher or clinician of the issues to consider when designing or choosing from alternative measures of team performance for training or assessment.

The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (Toronto Rehab) is a current leader in the movement of interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives in Ontario, Canada. Nine students from seven different health care disciplines, including medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, social work, and speech language pathology participated in the second IPE clinical placement in the winter of 2005 on Toronto Rehab's Stroke inpatient unit. ⋯ This paper discusses the students' perspectives on this IPE experience and the corresponding benefits and challenges. All participants in the study recognized the importance of interprofessional teamwork in patient care and agreed that all health care education should include opportunities enabling them to develop the skills, behaviours and attitudes needed for interprofessional collaboration.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether community pharmacists are prepared to assume a more active role as members of the primary health care team. A secondary objective was to develop multi-items scales for future studies involving pharmacists, as well as other health professions. This paper reports on rates of participation by community pharmacists as members of interprofessional health care teams, the extent to which this participation was related to pharmacists' attitudes about their preparedness for this role, their relationship with physicians, and their assessment of potential barriers to interprofessional teamwork within their practice setting. ⋯ Pharmacists on teams were more likely to agree there was more opportunity to meet and get to know other health disciplines, and to see teamwork as part of their role. They were also more likely to agree physicians wanted their input, and less likely to see other disciplines as being too protective of their professional "turf". Pharmacists on teams did not differ from those not on teams in rating lack of time, bad past experiences with teamwork, financial reimbursement or proximity to other health care workers as barriers to being a member of a community-based primary care team.

A need to introduce the concepts of death and dying to the medical and health sciences undergraduate curriculum was identified at the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. As care of the terminally ill is complex and requires the collaborative involvement of a diverse group of health care professionals, an interprofessional educational approach was utilized to address this need. ⋯ The discussion of roles and the provision of care within the context of works of selected literature provided a focus that enabled the students to transcend their disciplinary barriers, and to better understand the perspectives and contributions that other team members bring to patient care. Evaluation findings suggest that meaningful interprofessional education can be introduced effectively to students either prior to or while they are maturing in their professional roles.
