Due to the potentially life-threatening conditions and risk of severe complications, post-anesthesia care units (PACU) require prompt team interventions. Miscommunication among professionals during crisis event management may directly affect patient safety. Therefore, developing strategies to enhance interprofessional collaboration (IPC) among critical care teams should be prioritized. ⋯ Regarding communication, we observed a significant group effect from T1 to T2 (F = 7.5; p = 0.001). In conclusion, ISS-based training had a slight impact on self-assessed IPC and communication during crisis event management in the PACU. The use of ISS should be promoted among critical care teams to enhance IPC and contribute to patient safety.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an interprofessional Transitions of Care (TOC) service on 30-day hospital reutilization inclusive of hospital readmissions and ED visits. This was a retrospective cohort study including patients discharged from an academic medical center between September 2013 and October 2014. Patients scheduled for a hospital follow-up visit in the post-acute care clinic (PACC) were included in the intervention group and patients without a post-discharge interprofessional TOC service were included in the comparison group. ⋯ In the intention-to-treat analysis, the primary composite outcome was not significantly different between groups (16.97% vs. 19.39%, P = 0.4195) whereas in the per-protocol analysis (all patients who showed to their PACC appointment), the primary outcome was significantly different in favor of the intervention group (9.28% vs. 19.39%, P = 0.0009). When components were analyzed separately, there was a statistically significant difference in favor of intervention group for hospital readmissions, but there was no difference for ED visits. This study demonstrates that an outpatient interprofessional TOC service with patient engagement from a team of nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and social workers may reduce 30-day hospital readmissions but may not impact 30-day ED visits.

In an IPE environment, students are expected to have better understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and contribution of other health care professions to enhance interprofessional working and collaboration with an end result of improving patient-centred and team-based care. Although many studies have investigated students' attitudes, very few employ a mixed methods design and hardly are from Middle Eastern countries. A two-staged sequential explanatory mixed method design was used to comprehensively capture the perspectives of pharmacy students toward IPE and collaborative practice. ⋯ It also provided a useful insight into the readiness of pharmacy students in a Middle Eastern university. Students are seeking more IPE experiences formally incorporated into their curriculum and hence educators should capitalise on these positive and enthusiastic attitudes to identify the most effective means for delivering IPE and inform curricula planning. Collaborative practice-ready graduates will produce better-educated professionals delivering higher quality care.

The quality of health care and patient safety in the operating room is a major concern for nurse anaesthetists. However, few studies have focused on the experiences of nurse anaesthetists' and their contributions to safety in this setting. Therefore, this study aims to explore the content and frequency of incidents reported by nurse anaesthetists in the operating room and the risks involved in these incidents. ⋯ Patient safety reporting systems may be important to identify risk in preventing patients and health care professionals from being harmed. In addition, the findings indicate that the nurses sought to prevent harm to patients rather than to themselves. Consequently, increased attention to the work environments of nurses, and most likely other professionals, in the operating room may be needed to prevent health care professionals from being harmed.

This paper presents a study that aimed to develop and validate a theory-based instrument for the assessment of readiness to change for interprofessional collaboration in healthcare (IPC-TTM). The instrument was developed in the Persian language and tested in the Iranian context. Healthcare professionals from medical and nursing professions participated in the assessment of validity and reliability of the instrument. ⋯ Moreover, Cronbach's alpha for the Attitude, Intention, and Action sub-scales were 0.85, 0.73, and 0.77, respectively. This study offers a new theory-based instrument to measure readiness to change for interprofessional collaboration in healthcare in the Iranian context. The questionnaire can be used for 'needs assessment' in developing tailored educational interventions and self-assessments in interprofessional education studies.
