Congenital cardiovascular malformations (CCVMs) are relatively common with a prevalence of 5-10 per 1000 live births. Pulse oximetry screening is proposed to identify newborns with critical CCVMs which are missed by routine prenatal ultrasound and by pre-discharge physical examinations. The purpose of this study was to identify the number of infants with a delayed diagnosis of critical CCVMs potentially detectable by pre-discharge pulse oximetry screening. ⋯ Further examination of pulse oximetry as a routine newborn screening service is warranted. Implementation of pre-discharge pulse oximetry screening for newborns may improve the timely detection of asymptomatic critical CCVMs.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Seeing through the blind! Ability of hospital staff to differentiate morphine from placebo, in neonates at a placebo controlled trial.
To investigate whether professional training and/or clinical experience affect the ability of caregiver to assess clinical signs of pre-emptive morphine analgesia. ⋯ Clinical medical staffs, including neonatologists, have great difficulties in assessing the presence and severity of pain. Further studies should focus on the methods for assessment of prolonged pain in preterm neonates, define the effects of adequate analgesia, and investigate the clinical factors that may alter neonatal responses to acute and prolonged pain.

Treatment-by-gender effect when aiming to avoid hyperoxia in preterm infants in the NICU.
To examine gender-specific differences in response to the O(2) saturation (SpO(2)) targets aimed at avoiding hyperoxia in very low birth weight infants (VLBW). ⋯ There is a significant gender-specific difference favouring females in the beneficial effects produced by avoiding high SpO(2) and hyperoxia, with no difference in the distribution of any potential short-term detrimental effects.

The opinions of clinical staff regarding neonatal procedural pain in two Norwegian neonatal intensive care units.
Neonates are subjected to numerous painful procedures without sufficient pain management. The aim of this study was to describe the opinions of Norwegian physicians, nurses and nurse assistants who care for neonates, regarding procedural pain in neonates. ⋯ Procedural pain in neonates is not sufficiently managed and both pharmacological agents and comfort measures are underutilized, according to clinicians at two Norwegian NICU's.

To analyse the impact of pre- and post-natal smoke exposure on asthma presence, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, airway function and active smoking in early adulthood. ⋯ In subjects hospitalized due to early wheezing, pre- and post-natal smoke exposure increase the risk of asthma in early adulthood. The connection between pre-natal smoke exposure and asthma appears to be mediated via the development of bronchial hyper-responsiveness. Smoke exposure in infancy is associated with an increased risk of active smoking in early adult age, which is in turn linked to current asthma.
