Naloxone, a specific opiate antagonist, is widely used during neonatal resuscitation to reverse possible opiate-induced respiratory depression. ⋯ Naloxone is rarely needed to reverse the effects of opiates in newborn infants, and its use can be curtailed by following current resuscitation guidelines without increasing respiratory morbidity.

We report the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) for neonatal back transfer of 51 babies. nCPAP may be used to provide safe respiratory support during back transportation of infants. Babies transferred on nCPAP were significantly smaller and of younger postmenstrual age than historical comparators who had to wait for transfer until independent of nCPAP. nCPAP transferred babies spent significantly less time on the intensive care unit.

Effects of hydroxyethyl starch on cardiac output in hypotensive neonates: a comparison with isotonic saline and 5% albumin.
To evaluate the effects of hydroxyethyl starch (6% HES 200/0.5) on cardiac output in hypotensive neonates with low cardiac output and absence of myocardial dysfunction. ⋯ This study did not provide evidence that hydroxyethyl starch is more efficient than isotonic saline or albumin.

The aim of the study was to identify the relationship of acquired neutropenias with infections in childhood and to assess their course, complications, short and long-term outcome. ⋯ Neutropenia during childhood is usually transient, often following viral and common bacterial infections, does not present serious complications and in the majority, it resolves spontaneously. However, in a significant percentage of patients, neutropenia is discovered during the course of an infection, on a ground of a preceding chronic neutropenic status.

To determine what proportion of newborns with critical heart defects are discharged undiagnosed from the maternity ward. ⋯ Many infants with critical congenital heart defects are not diagnosed before discharge from the neonatal maternity ward. The proportion discharged undiagnosed has increased. Neonatal screening fails mainly in children with duct-dependent systemic circulation.
