The study assessed the effectiveness of a pilot intervention to promote the use of eyeglasses in one school in California. The intervention used a one-group pretest, posttest design. Between January and June 2011, during the intervention, all first- and second-grade children received eye evaluations and the children with refractive error received two pairs of attractive eyeglasses. ⋯ Teachers monitored the use of eyeglasses in the classroom. Prior to the intervention in January 2011, 1 of the 15 children with refractive error (6.7%) wore eyeglasses in the classroom and the remaining 14 (93.3%) lacked eyeglasses altogether; 6 months following the end of the intervention in December 2011, 11 of the 15 children (73.3%) wore eyeglasses in the classroom and the remaining 4 (26.7%) did not (p = .002). The multifactorial intervention increased the use of eyeglasses in the classroom even months after the end of the summer vacation.

Since anaphylaxis is unpredictable, rapid in onset, and potentially life threatening, it is critical for school staff to recognize and respond to its symptoms quickly. The symptoms of anaphylaxis can be challenging to differentiate, particularly in school-age children who may have trouble explaining what they are experiencing. ⋯ The school nurse should create and coordinate individualized emergency care/action plans for students with known allergies, as well as a comprehensive care plan for all students, to ensure a safe environment and a rapid response to any life-threatening allergic reaction. This should include having epinephrine stocked and readily accessible so that it can be given promptly in the case of an anaphylactic emergency.

The aim of this phenomenological study was to describe the phenomenon of health as experienced by adolescent girls in Sweden. Fifteen adolescent girls were interviewed with a focus on what made them feel well in their everyday life. This study reveals that the adolescent girl's health is a complex phenomenon interwoven with their lives. ⋯ Health is shaped in their everyday life and can be understood as a mood of "being" well that involves actions and practices. The results show that it is important to meet these girls from an open approach in order to support and strengthen their health and well-being. The health of adolescent girls can be supported, and it is a challenge for professionals, particularly school nurses, who meet these girls in everyday life to improve their health.

The purpose of this research is to use the reports of school nurses to facilitate the understanding of how schools experience and manage asthmatic, anaphylactic, and diabetic emergencies by quantitative and qualitative analysis of online surveys. E-mails with a link to SurveyMonkey® were sent to all U. S. members of the National Association of School Nurses (13,695). ⋯ Regarding the frequency of emergencies in a given school year, the medians were 8 for asthma, 0 for anaphylaxis, and 10 for hypoglycemia. Twenty-two, five, and one subjects, respectively, reported that events like these resulted in deaths during their careers as school nurses. These diseases create substantial potential for emergencies in schools, and the schools represented by these nurses appear to be somewhat, but not ideally, equipped to handle such crises.

The incidence of childhood overweight is especially troubling among low income Latino youth. Grand Canyon Trekkers (GCT) was implemented as a quasi-experimental study in 10 Title 1 elementary schools with a large Latino population to examine the effects of a 16-week structured walking program on components of health-related physical fitness: Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference, and cardio-respiratory. Data on 1,074 research participants revealed no significance changes in BMI or waist circumference (p > .05); however, cardio-respiratory fitness increased by 37.1% over baseline. Cardiovascular fitness is an independent determinant of long-term health; therefore, the GCT program may have significantly improved the future health profile of the participants and decreased their risk of metabolic diseases.
