The reliability and validity of the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand, EuroQol-5D, Health Utilities Index, and Short Form-6D outcome instruments in patients with proximal humeral fractures.
The Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, Hand (DASH), EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D), Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3), and Short Form (SF)-6D questionnaires are reliable and valid measures of functional outcome and health state values in patients with proximal humeral fractures. ⋯ The DASH and SF-6D questionnaires demonstrated the best psychometric properties among the study instruments. These results support their use as appropriate measures of functional outcome and health state values in patients with proximal humeral fractures.

Results of treatment of luxatio erecta (inferior shoulder dislocation).
Traumatic inferior shoulder dislocation (luxatio erecta) injuries are rare, comprising less than 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. Few cases have been reported, and the outcome of treatment has been ill defined. ⋯ Our experience suggests that treatment of luxatio erecta is largely successful, with good or excellent results obtained in 83% of the shoulders. Half of the patients evaluated, required only closed reduction as their definitive treatment. Operative treatment is typically indicated for associated displaced humeral head fractures or patients with recurrent instability. Recurrent instability appears to be more likely in patients with a previous history of dislocation. Associated neurologic or vascular injury did not affect the final outcome.

The effect of matrix metalloproteinase inhibition on tendon-to-bone healing in a rotator cuff repair model.
Recent studies have demonstrated a potentially critical role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in the pathophysiology of rotator cuff tears. We hypothesize that local delivery of a MMP inhibitor after surgical repair of the rotator cuff will improve healing at the tendon-to-bone surface interface. ⋯ Local delivery of an MMP inhibitor is associated with distinct histologic differences at the tendon-to-bone interface after rotator cuff repair. Modulation of MMP activity after rotator cuff repair may offer a novel biologic pathway to augment tendon-to-bone healing after rotator cuff repair.

Comparative StudyElbow strength and endurance in patients with a ruptured distal biceps tendon.
Patients with complete distal biceps tendon ruptures complain of fatigability with repeated elbow flexion and forearm supination. Some studies have documented changes in strength, but limited information is available about the effects of biceps tendon rupture on endurance. ⋯ A ruptured distal biceps tendon results in a substantial decrease in flexion and supination strength.
