Pediatric perioperative outcomes: protocol for a systematic literature review and identification of a core outcome set for infants, children, and young people requiring anesthesia and surgery.
Clinical outcomes are measurable changes in health, function, or quality of life that are important for evaluating the quality of care and comparing the efficacy of interventions. However, clinical outcomes and related measurement tools need to be well-defined, relevant, and valid. In adults, Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) methodology has been used to develop core outcome sets for perioperative care. ⋯ Here, we describe the formation of the international Pediatric Perioperative Outcomes Group, which aims to identify and create validated, broadly applicable, patient-centered outcome measures for infants, children, and young people. Methodologies parallel that of the StEP and COMPAC projects, and systematic literature searches have been performed within agreed age-dependent subpopulations to identify reported outcomes and measurement tools. This represents the first steps for developing core outcome sets for pediatric perioperative care.

Knowledge about airway dimensions during child growth is of paramount importance for pediatric clinical practice. Decisions about airway management in children are based on relatively limited, imprecise, or incomplete data about airway size. ⋯ This comprehensive anatomical database of upper airway dimensions provides important data in the field of pediatric airway anatomy, particularly relating to the cricoid. We demonstrated that laryngeal, tracheal, and bronchial parameters correlate better to age and have three different growth phases.

Observational StudyFeasibility of Awake Craniotomy in the Pediatric Population.
Awake craniotomy with direct cortical stimulation and mapping is the gold standard for resection of lesions near eloquent brain areas, as it can maximize the extent of resection while minimizing the risk of neurological damage. In contrast to the adult population, only small series of awake craniotomies have been reported in children. ⋯ Awake craniotomy with intraoperative mapping can be successfully performed in children. Adequate patient selection and close cooperation between neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, neuropsychologists, and neurophysiologists is paramount. Further studies are needed to determine the best anesthetic technique in this population group.
