Effects of apparatus dead space on volumetric capnograms in neonates with healthy lungs: a simulation study.
Volumetric capnography in healthy ventilated neonates showed deformed waveforms, which are supposedly due to technological limitations of flow and carbon dioxide sensors. ⋯ The addition of a small apparatus dead space artificially deformed the volumetric capnograms in simulated neonates with healthy lungs.

Effect of tidal volume change on pressure-based prediction of fluid responsiveness in children.
It is known that pulse pressure variation and systolic pressure variation cannot predict fluid responsiveness in children. In adults, the ability of these dynamic parameters to predict fluid responsiveness is improved by increasing tidal volume. We planned to investigate whether pulse pressure variation or systolic pressure variation can predict fluid responsiveness in children when augmented by increasing tidal volume by conducting a prospective study. ⋯ Augmented pulse pressure variation or systolic pressure variation due to increased tidal volume cannot predict fluid responsiveness in children after simple cardiac surgery.

Inhalation anesthesia without any intravenous management for pediatric proton beam therapy.
Proton beam therapy is an oncological treatment, argued to be an appropriate tumor irradiation technique for childhood solid tumors. Due to its duration and the need for immobility, many children require anesthesia for proton therapy sessions. As not many centers in the world provide this therapy, there is little published research about pediatric anesthesia for these cases, and the available data suggest a preference for intravenous anesthesia or combined intravenous and inhalation anesthesia. We conducted this study with the aim of describing and analyzing the inhalation anesthetic management of children undergoing proton therapy at our medical center, comparing our results with studies that have followed different anesthetic protocols. ⋯ Inhalation anesthesia without any intravenous management for pediatric proton therapy is, in our experience, an effective technique with a complication rate similar to other anesthetic approaches.

Observational StudyAssociation between regional oxygen saturation and central venous saturation in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery: A prospective observational study.
We evaluated the correlation between regional oxygen saturation (rSO2 ) in the frontal and right renal dorsum (cerebral rSO2 and somatic rSO2 ) measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (INVOS™ 5100C, Medtronic) and central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2 ) measured with a fiber-optic oximetry catheter (PediaSat™, Edwards Lifesciences) during surgery in order to determine whether noninvasive rSO2 could be used as an alternative to ScvO2 in pediatric cardiac surgery patients. We evaluated the correlation between regional tissue oxygen saturation (cerebral rSO2 and somatic rSO2 ) measured by near-infrared spectroscopy and other patient measures with central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2 ) measured with a fiber-optic oximetry catheter to track global oxygen supply demand as a potential alternative or supplement to ScvO2 . ⋯ Cerebral rSO2 , SpO2 , and BNP were significantly correlated with ScvO2 , although the cerebral rSO2 correlation was greater for lesions without atrial mixing. rSO2 , BNP, and SpO2 might be used to track changes in ScvO2 but cerebral rSO2 is not sufficiently precise to replace it.
