Exploring which variables are related to work status in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), classified according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). ⋯ The relation between work status and CLBP is multidimensional, as was illustrated by using the bio-psychosocial model of the ICF. Patients with a low educational level, a low self-reported physical or mental health were more likely to be non-working. Self-reported limitations and physical and mental health are more important in explaining work status than objective measurements of performance.

To prepare a Japanese-language version of the Physical Performance Test (PPT) Battery and assess its reliability and validity. ⋯ The Japanese-language version of the PPT Battery was shown to possess adequate reliability and validity as a scale for evaluating the activity limitations of patients with chronic limb or trunk pain. The results also suggested that it might be possible to improve the activity limitations of patients with chronic pain by improving their affective state in response to the pain.

The perception of pain and pain-related cognitions in subacute whiplash-associated disorders: its influence on prolonged disability.
To clarify the relations between the sensory, affective and cognitive dimensions of pain and to analyse what influence these components have on persistent disability in patients with subacute whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). ⋯ The treatment approach for patients with subacute WAD should incorporate the multidimensional nature of pain and to prevent disability special effort should be made to enhance the patient's self-efficacy beliefs.

There is no knowledge if short-term outcome in patients after anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) can be used to identify which patients have remaining deficit in long term. This study investigates if 6-month outcome with a broad assessment after ACDF with a cervical intervertebral fusion cage can be a guide for the 3-years outcome. ⋯ Despite a rather small study obtained the stability of 6-month and 3-year results indicates that short-term results might be sufficient for evaluating effects of the treatment. Since the patients in this study clearly demonstrate broad problems array of development of more structured multi-professional rehabilitation models including exercises which improve neck muscle strength, endurance and proprioception need to be introduced.

This article considers the role of theory and theory building in science and specifically in rehabilitation. It is argued that rehabilitation has tended to value theory testing over theory building and some evidence is presented for this. ⋯ More time spent on rehabilitation theory building may enhance the fruits of empirical theory testing.
