The reasons for fractures in the elderly patients are multifactorial. Osteoporosis is considered to be the main pathology. Other reasons are the increase in fall frequency and the protective response to trauma. The most common sites at which these fractures occur are the hip, vertebra and distal radius. A combination of these is uncommon. ⋯ A combination of these fractures is probably more traumatic and occurs in the higher-age group. It is always located in the ipsilateral side. The double trauma represents a better pre-morbid condition relative to patients in the same age group, and thus it may serve as a prognostic indicator for success in rehabilitation.

To outline the thinking of disabled people about their situation and status before the formulation of the ICIDH (International Classification of Impairment, Disability and Handicap) in 1980, the growth of the international disability rights movement since 1980, its subsequent involvement in the revision process and then its hopes as to the effectiveness of the ICF (the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-the revised ICIDH) in the future. ⋯ That proper use of the environmental factors within the ICF will ensure appropriate policies, systems and services for health care and support, provide measurable indicators for health status and sustainable development and underpin the recognition that disability is a human rights issue.

This study describes a subgroup of diagnostically heterogeneous chronic pain patients, with a lifetime history of physical and/or sexual abuse, who underwent a pain management programme. A battery of psychosocial and pain measures were assessed, as well as 1-year post-treatment socio economic outcomes. ⋯ Chronic patients with an abuse history can successfully complete a rehabilitation programme if the programme is designed to treat their psychosocial distress. Moreover, this also carries over to treatment outcome. A history of abuse does not have to negatively impact long-term treatment outcomes in this population of chronic pain patients.

This survey was carried out to study the views of multidisciplinary health professionals about discussing sexual issues with patients. ⋯ Health professionals agreed that patients' sexual issues needed to be addressed and discussed in health services. However, they were poorly trained, ill prepared and rarely participated in such discussion. This suggests that training in sexuality and sexual issues should be implemented as part of the training of health care professionals.

Analysis of medical decisions in the differential allocation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation programmes. ⋯ Physician characteristics influenced setting preferences. Preferences for type of treatment and ADL-prognosis depended on patients' variables only. Expected effects of rehabilitation were independent on rehabilitation setting and kinds of treatment.
