To investigate the interactions between self-efficacy - including subcomponents - and symptoms (pain, depression and anxiety), catastrophising, disability, quality of life and health in a population of patients with chronic pain. ⋯ There is a complex interaction of psychological factors and symptoms and their positive and negative influence on disability, quality of life and health. The results indicate that it might be important to assess and influence both enhancing and detoriating factors to ensure an effective pain management programme.

Indigenous peoples often have the worst health status in comparison to non-indigenous people in their own nations; urgent action to address the health inequities for indigenous people is required. The role of rehabilitation in addressing health and disability inequities is particularly important due to the health need of indigenous peoples; the unequal distribution of health determinants; and disparities in access to, quality of care through and outcomes following rehabilitation. This article will present a perspective for Māori, the indigenous peoples of New Zealand, on a framework for improving rehabilitation services for Māori and ultimately their health and wellbeing.

Twice-yearly meetings of The British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (BSRM) take place at which posters and free papers are generated, as abstracts, to present novel research findings, audits and case reports. The aim of this study was to evaluate the academic value of these meetings, by determining the subsequent rate of publication in peer-reviewed journals of abstracts presented. This was compared to the publication rate of other European medical specialist society meetings. ⋯ The average publication rate for an abstract submitted to a BSRM meeting is 34% for any abstract and 52% for an original study suggesting that the meeting is generating abstracts of comparable academic interest to other specialist societies.

In Haiti, there are scarce resources available for physical rehabilitation. Healing Hands for Haiti International Foundation has established a rehabilitation aide programme as a means of providing rehabilitation services. This article illustrates some of the successes, challenges, and dilemmas that arise in the provision of such an education. ⋯ The most common difficulties and dilemmas in providing a rehabilitation aide programme were: lack of resources including job opportunities for graduates, and lack of proper support available from supervising healthcare providers. Curricula for similar programs must be culturally sensitive, help create employment opportunities, and provide continuing educational opportunities for their graduates.

The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between known cognitive factors and levels of pain and disability in patients with idiopathic chronic neck pain. ⋯ Cognitive factors were strongly related to levels of pain and disability in patients with chronic neck pain. In view of this, targeting the modification of these cognitive factors should be an integral part of therapy when treating patients with idiopathic chronic neck pain.
