To explore the role dimensions, competence and professional development needs of practice nurses in Ireland from both the general practitioner's and practice nurse's perspective and highlight any agreement/disagreement between the professions. ⋯ This research provides data for role clarity and evidence-based role development for practice nurses within the context of evolving primary care services. It also indicates how general practitioners perceive the nursing role.

The study aim was to develop a service evaluation tool for an advance care planning model implemented in community palliative care. ⋯ The Advance Care Planning-Service Evaluation Tool enables nurses in community palliative care to monitor, evaluate and plan quality improvement of their advance care planning model to improve end-of-life care. As the tool describes generic healthcare processes, there is potential transferability of the tool to other types of services.

To identify maternal, newborn and obstetric factors associated with birth-related perineal trauma in one independent birth centre. ⋯ The use of upright alternative positions for birth and avoidance of use of oxytocin could reduce the risk of perineal trauma from lacerations and need to perform episiotomy.

The objective of this systematic review was to describe peer support interventions supporting breastfeeding during pregnancy and the postnatal period. ⋯ Professionals require breastfeeding education to act as breastfeeding supporters as well as the support of their organisations in this work. Moreover, professionals need to gain knowledge of the role of peer support regarding the efficient combination of professional support and peer support to increase breastfeeding.

To define the needs of intensive care unit patients' families in the specific suburban/rural population of Crete Island. ⋯ Enhanced recognition of these needs may improve quality of care offered by intensive care unit-care team to families of their patients.
