Antiplatelet therapy (AT) is increasingly used for treating or preventing vascular diseases, especially as a consequence of population aging. However, the risks may sometimes outweigh the benefits, mostly in relation to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). Our aim was to determine whether AT is associated with hematoma enlargement and increased mortality in ICH. ⋯ Our results show an association between AT and subsequent hematoma enlargement, as well as increased mortality in patients presenting with ICH who were receiving AT.

With the aim of analyzing the current state of the educational objectives in the training of medical residents in solid organ transplantation (SOT), we conducted a review of the status of the official programs of the specialities involved in SOT, focusing particularly on lung transplantation. A survey of medical residents was also conducted to allow reflexion about the topic. We obtained 44 surveys from 4 University Hospitals with active programs in SOT, mainly from intensive care medicine and anesthesiology residents. ⋯ We also identified that these educational aspects should be directed not only to medical residents from specialities with a close retation to SOT, but also to all who may at some time have a relation to such patients. The use of information and communication techniques (ICTs), on-line courses and also simulations should be instruments to take into account in the biomedical training of medical residents. We conclude that we need a specific training program in complications of SOT, as well as fundamental principles in immunology and immunosuppressor pharmacology.

To determine the prognostic value of the biomarkers procalcitonin, interlukin-6 and C-reactive protein in septic patients. ⋯ 1) Interleukin-6 is an inflammatory biomarker with mortality prognostic value. 2) None of the biomarkers proved predictive of multiorgan failure.

Variables predicting optimal timing for tracheostomy decannulation remain unknown. We aimed to determine whether classifying patients into two groups according to their indications for tracheostomy could identify variables associated with time to decannulation. ⋯ Variables associated with longer time to decannulation in ICU-tracheostomized patients differ with the indications for tracheostomy.
