Multicenter Study
Quality of anthropometric measurements in Spanish Intensive Care Units (The CAMIES Study).
Real body weight and height are essential data to be obtained in all critically ill patients (CIP), due to their influence in the designing of therapies and monitoring. Visual estimation is a very inaccurate practice. No precise descriptions of anthropometric measurements among CIP are available in the clinical practice guides. ⋯ Visually estimated measurements exceed real measurements in the routine practice of Spanish ICUs. Measurement tools are not widely available in the ICU, and even when available, their use is not guaranteed. The surveyed population does not view anthropometric measures as being important for clinical practice. An effort should be made by scientific societies to promote reliable anthropometric practice in Spanish ICUs.

Observational Study
Oncological patients admitted to an intensive care unit. Analysis of predictors of in-hospital mortality.
To analyze the factors influencing in-hospital mortality among cancer patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). ⋯ In our series, only one-third of the critically ill cancer patients admitted to the ICU died during hospital admission, and more than 50% showed good performance status at hospital discharge. The clinical prognostic factors associated to in-hospital mortality were poor performance status, metastatic disease, SOFA score at ICU admission and acute kidney injury.

The appropriate interpretation of the statistical results is crucial to understand the advances in medical science. The statistical tools allow us to transform the uncertainty and apparent chaos in nature to measurable parameters which are applicable to our clinical practice. The importance of understanding the meaning and actual extent of these instruments is essential for researchers, the funders of research and for professionals who require a permanent update based on good evidence and supports to decision making. Various aspects of the designs, results and statistical analysis are reviewed, trying to facilitate his comprehension from the basics to what is most common but no better understood, and bringing a constructive, non-exhaustive but realistic look.
