To determine the degree of knowledge about intensive medicine and interest in this specialty among medical students in Spain. ⋯ Although some aspects of intensive medicine are not well known among medical students, the general level of knowledge about intensive medicine is acceptable and more than half of the medical students surveyed will consider it when deciding on a specialty.

[Secondary prevention of alcohol and/or drug abuse in trauma patients: results of a national survey in Spain].
To determine the degree of activity in the field of secondary prevention of alcohol and/or drug abuse in trauma patients in Spain. ⋯ Most centers surveyed are unaware of the usefulness of secondary prevention in trauma patients. This lack of awareness may be responsible for the lack of activity in this field in Spain. A plan to increase awareness, including educational interventions, is necessary to promote secondary prevention of alcohol and drug abuse among trauma patients.

The safety and quality care are two attributes of the health care that are closely intertwined. Quality is a feature of the system that delivers health care, thereby improving it, we need a proper reorganization teamwork. ⋯ The evidence currently available suggest that the safety and quality of care can be improved. In this article presents some of the strategies and interventions developed to optimize the processes of care in critically ill patients, and improve the safety culture in the ICU.

The incidence of pressure ulcers in the literature varies from 4.7% to 18.6%. In our study, we have aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors associated with the occurrence of pressure ulcers in critically ill patients. ⋯ The incidence of pressure ulcers in the study population is very high. The risk factors most often found are presence of infection, days of stay and high APACHE II score.

To study the minimum assistance level during proportional assist ventilation (PAV) to decrease the work of breathing to physiological limits (0.6 j/l) and the relationship between breathing pattern changes and respiratory effort at different PAV levels. ⋯ In the group of patients studied, the increase in the PAV levels decreases work of breathing, without significantly changing the breathing pattern. Levels lower than 30% of PAV are associated to excessive work of breathing.
