To determine longitudinal rates of ocular complications after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a nationally representative longitudinal sample. ⋯ Rates of endophthalmitis, uveitis, and vitreous hemorrhage were higher in the group treated with anti-VEGF injection than in the control group, although these nevertheless were rare in both groups. The overall risk of severe ocular complications was significantly higher in the anti-VEGF treatment group.

Comparison of ultrasound biomicroscopic configurations among primary angle closure, its suspects, and nonoccludable angles: the Kumejima Study.
To quantitatively characterize the ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) configurations of the peripheral anterior chamber (AC) in primary angle closure (PAC) and its suspects and to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the UBM parameters to differentiate PAC/PAC suspects in a population-based setting. ⋯ Eyes with PAC/PAC suspects had shallow ACs, anteriorly located ciliary bodies, and smaller dark-light changes in the peripheral AC depth, while the iris thickness was similar to that in eyes with nonoccludable angles. The peripheral AC depth under light conditions could most clearly differentiate PAC/PAC suspects from nonoccludable angles.

To quantify and characterize eye injuries related to aerosol container consumer products treated in United States hospital emergency departments (EDs) from 1997 through 2009. ⋯ This study suggests that most aerosol container-related eye injuries in the United States occur in men and children and that self-inflicted spray to the eye is the most common mechanism of injury. Further research is needed to devise effective prevention strategies for these types of injuries.

Tear osmolarity in the diagnosis and management of dry eye disease.
To evaluate the use of tear osmolarity in the diagnosis of dry eye disease. ⋯ Tear osmolarity is the best single metric both to diagnose and classify dry eye disease. Intereye variability is a characteristic of dry eye not seen in normal subjects.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Intravitreal injection anesthesia--comparison of different topical agents: a prospective randomized controlled trial.
To compare the anesthetic effectiveness of 3 topical agents used for intravitreal injections. ⋯ There was no clinical difference in patient pain experience between the 3 anesthetic options tested. The addition of a 4% lidocaine pledget offered no clinical advantage in pain relief compared to 0.5% tetracaine or 4% cocaine (+ epinephrine 1/100,000) drops alone.
