The intraorbital optic nerve sheath meninges contain a perineural subarachnoid space lined by meningeal cell layers and intercellular fibrous tissue. We sought to determine whether functional or structural characteristics, or both, of the optic nerve sheath are influenced by the increased intracranial pressure after the rupture of cerebral aneurysms. ⋯ The meningeal fluid barrier of the optic nerve sheath can be destroyed by pressure changes associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage. This disruption might be regarded as a natural optic nerve sheath fenestration that allows outflow of cerebrospinal fluid into the orbit to protect the optic nerve from increased intracranial pressure after aneurysmal rupture.

Efficacy of topical povidone-iodine during the first week after ophthalmic surgery.
In the first postoperative day, povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution prevents an increase in conjunctival bacterial colony-forming units and decreases the species compared with antibiotic. We sought to determine whether these beneficial effects of povidone-iodine could be sustained during the first postoperative week. ⋯ Povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution is an alternative to postoperative topical antibiotics because of its effectiveness in controlling conjunctival bacterial colony-forming units and species, its relatively low cost, and its availability.

Blinking is controlled primarily by ocular surface conditions.
To investigate the relation between blinking and ocular surface conditions and to introduce and examine a new index, the maximum blink interval. ⋯ There was an important association among blink rate, maximum blink interval, and ocular surface conditions. The blink rate and our newly introduced measurement, the maximum blink interval, should prove useful in assessing factors that cause dry eye. This prospective study should contribute to the understanding and treatment of dry eyes.

To report a child with anterior lens capsule rupture caused by air bag inflation. ⋯ Our case, in which the patient's lens capsule was ruptured by air bag inflation, illustrates that air bag deployment, even in minor low-speed accidents, can cause severe blunt trauma to the eye.

A system for classifying mechanical injuries of the eye (globe). The Ocular Trauma Classification Group.
To develop a classification system for mechanical injuries of the eye. ⋯ This classification system will categorize ocular injuries at the time of initial examination. It is designed to promote the use of standard terminology and assessment, with applications to clinical management and research stud ies regarding eye injuries.
