Children with chronic conditions experience medical issues over long-term periods of time which can have lasting emotional and social consequences impacting daily life and functioning. Activities and participation outcomes are needed in order to comprehensively assess child-important health in clinical trials. Our objective was to review the extent to which activity and participation outcomes are included in clinical trials of childhood chronic disease and to determine what trial characteristics are associated with their use. ⋯ Most registered clinical trials for children with chronic or ongoing medical conditions do not include a comprehensive approach to health outcomes assessment, especially drug trials and early phase trials. Outcome measures in pediatric clinical trials are lagging relative to World Health Organization standards for comprehensive health evaluation.

Multicenter Study
Development and validation of the functional assessment of chronic illness therapy treatment satisfaction (FACIT TS) measures.
To develop and validate a new functional assessment of chronic illness therapy (FACIT) measure of satisfaction with treatment for chronic illnesses such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. ⋯ The two instruments generated here offer a new way to assess several key dimensions of patient satisfaction with treatment, especially for people with lung cancer.

Quality of life (QL) is a key outcome for advanced disease cancer patients. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has developed the QLQ-C15-PAL questionnaire, a short version of the QLQ-C30 for palliative care. The aim of the present study is to validate the QLQ-C15-PAL for use with Spanish patients with bone metastasis. ⋯ The QLQ-C15-PAL is a reliable and valid instrument when applied to a sample of Spanish patients. These results are in line with those of other validation studies.

This prospective study examined the psychometric properties of the adapted Dutch translation of the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaire in patients with isolated unilateral lower fracture (LEF) or upper extremity fracture (UEF). ⋯ The SMFA has good psychometric properties in patients with fractures. Patients with UEF and LEF could not be regarded as a homogenous group. The development of separate SMFA modules should be considered.

The aim of our study was to undertake a prospective validation study of the Polish version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) bone metastases (QLQ-BM22) module used alongside the EORTC core measure. ⋯ Our study provides new and robust evidence which shows that the Polish version of the QLQ-BM22 module is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring health-related quality of life in patients with bone metastases. It is suitable for use in clinical trials and in research.
