Patients hospitalized with acute heart disease [acute myocardial infarction (MI); heart disease exacerbation] may require red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. These patients are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality. Hematological biomarkers may help to identify increased mortality risk. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between hematological biomarkers and survival in these patients. ⋯ Hematological biomarkers may help to identify increased mortality risk of acute heart disease patients, receiving RBC transfusions in an internal medicine department.

The prevalence of Fabry disease (FD) in Chinese patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of FD in Chinese patients with HCM. ⋯ FD is not uncommon in Chinese patients with HCM. Multiple organic involvement, dual ventricular hypertrophy, and conduction disease provide clinical clues for suspected FD, and early genetic screening is necessary. Surgical septal myectomy and migalastat improve the long-term prognosis of patients with FD.

Prostate transmembrane protein androgen-induced 1 (PMEPA1) is reportedly highly expressed in pancreatic cancer (PC). However, its biological role and associated mechanisms have not been addressed in PC progression. ⋯ PMEPA1 promotes the progression of PC at least partially by activating the MAPK signaling pathway; thus, the PMEPA1/MAPK axis may be a potential therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer.
