The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a new marker of adipose dysfunction and related with cardiometabolic risk. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of VAI with arterial stiffness in elderly Chinese population. ⋯ This study demonstrates that VAI is independently associated with the risk of arterial stiffness in elderly population.

In the general population, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is associated with increased all-cause mortality. Transplant patients have been shown to have an increased risk of developing cSCC, and their cSCC is associated with an increased risk for mortality. In end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, there is extensive mortality and immune dysfunction. Because of this immune system dysfunction, we examined whether cSCC is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality among ESRD patients, as well as the risk factors for cSCC. ⋯ Contrary to expectations, ESRD patients with a cSCC diagnosis showed reduced all-cause mortality risk relative to those without. The reason for this discrepancy remains unclear, suggesting the need for further study.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with increased mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The prevalence of PH within ESRD as measured by right heart catheterization (RHC) is poorly described, and the correlation of BNP to pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) is unknown. ⋯ In ESRD patients being considered for renal transplantation, PH is highly prevalent and BNP levels are elevated and significantly correlated with higher PAP. BNP may be a useful non-invasive marker of PH in these patients.
