Sortilin, a pluripotent peptide hormone, plays a role in glucose and lipid metabolism. A link between sortilin and insulin sensitivity has been implicated. However, the clinical implications of this link remain elusive. Our aims were to investigate whether sortilin levels were altered in subjects with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (nT2DM) compared with subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and to determine whether a link exist between sortilin levels and metabolic parameters. ⋯ Decreased circulating levels of sortilin were associated with unfavorable metabolic profiles in subjects with nT2DM.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the role of renin-angiotensin system (RAS)-related components, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and atrial metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) in synovial tissue and synovial fluid from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ The present results suggest that RAS-related components in RA and OA, including renin, ACE, angiotensin type 1 and type 2 receptors, are associated with increased expression of VEGF and play an important role in angiogenesis. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and MMP-13.

Hyperuricemia is associated with the development, progression and outcome of several diseases. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the serum uric acid (UA) levels as a predictor of long-term mortality in an older population (age 60 years and above). ⋯ Elevated levels of UA in older patients in acute settings is a predictor of long-term mortality.
