Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic, spiral-shaped motile bacterium that is strongly associated with gastroduodenal diseases, but recently, dental plaque and saliva have been implicated as possible sources of H pylori infection. Two virulence factors that are expressed by the alleles of the cytotoxin genes, cagA and vacA, have been identified. The aim of this study was to compare cagA and vacA genotypes of H pylori between stomach and saliva in a same patient. ⋯ The data suggest that >1 H pylori strain may exist in stomach and saliva in the same patient.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the urinary excretion of angiotensinogen is significantly increased in ANG II-infused hypertensive rats, which is associated with an augmentation of intrarenal ANG II levels. These findings suggest that urinary angiotensinogen excretion rates provide an index of intrarenal ANG II levels in ANG II-dependent hypertensive states. However, little information is available regarding the urinary excretion of angiotensinogen in ANG II-dependent malignant hypertension. ⋯ These data demonstrate that the urinary excretion of angiotensinogen is markedly augmented in ANG II-dependent malignant hypertension. Such increased urinary angiotensinogen excretion may contribute to augmented intrarenal ANG II levels and, thereby, to the increased blood pressure in Cyp1a1-Ren2 transgenic rats with inducible ANG II-dependent malignant hypertension.

Therapeutic effects of marine collagen peptides on Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and primary hypertension.
Marine collagen peptides (MCPs) from deep sea fish are shown to ameliorate hyperlipidemia in animal models. The study aimed at examining the effects of MCPs on glucose and lipid metabolism in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and primary hypertension. ⋯ MCPs supplement may benefit glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, renal function and hypertension management in Chinese patients with T2DM and hypertension.

The main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of apolipoprotein E (Apo E) and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) polymorphisms and their influence on the development of Alzheimer disease (AD) in the Ecuadorian population. ⋯ Apo E is not a risk factor, nor a protective one for AD, whereas the leu allele of GPX1 is a possible risk factor for the disease.
