Comparative Study
Investigation of a thermoplastic polymeric carrier for bone tissue engineering using allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in granular scaffolds.
The purpose of this project was to compare alveolar bone repair by allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells using bioglass or synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA)/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) granular scaffolds delivered in a thermoplastic polymeric carrier. ⋯ The thermoplastic polymeric carrier did not limit alveolar bone repair in the canine mandible. The combination of a thermoplastic, viscous carrier with a granular scaffold allowed for the delivery of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in a clinically manageable form that enhanced bone formation at early stages of alveolar repair.

While facing a shortage of faculty members, dental schools need to be innovative in their educational methodologies. One approach to augment student learning would be to mentor dental students as participating faculty in current courses. A study was undertaken to evaluate dental students as instructors in preclinical prosthodontics and occlusion courses. ⋯ This study demonstrated that from the perspective of second year dental students, senior and junior dental students were accepted as preclinical instructors in prosthodontics and occlusion preclinical courses. Additionally, senior and junior students who participated in student teaching had a positive experience. The use of dental students as preclinical faculty in prosthodontics and occlusion appears to be a viable approach for mentoring students in careers in academics, providing student instructors with higher learning experiences, and supplementing the efforts of full-time faculty.

The University of Southern California School of Dentistry (USCSD) seeks to educate oral health professionals with a balanced curriculum covering health promotion, risk assessment and disease prevention, diagnostics, treatments, and therapeutics. Based on critical analyses of a 5-year educational demonstration project, the USCSD proposed to use problem-based learning (PBL) to achieve its goals. ⋯ To achieve this, the USCSD Curriculum Subcommittee on Faculty Development, Mentoring, and Evaluation has designed and implemented a series of workshops to train its faculty as facilitators. There are four Core Skills Workshops: PBL Process Workshop, Facilitation of Learning Workshop, Student Assessment and Feedback Workshop, and PBL in the Clinical Environment.

The objective of this study was to qualitatively investigate the effect of the burn-out (mold) temperature, investment material, and casting alloy on the surface integrity of the Magfit EX keeper. ⋯ Beauty-Cast investment with a burn-out temperature of 700 degrees C is unsuitable for casting the Magfit EX keeper-coping unit. Also, high fusing alloys are not recommended for casting Magfit EX keepers.
