This study examined the relation between peritraumatic dissociation and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in victims of motor vehicle accidents. ⋯ Peritraumatic dissociation is common following motor vehicle accidents and is a risk factor for acute and chronic PTSD, independent of risk associated with prior PTSD.

Clinicians are under increasing pressure to transfer inpatients with anorexia nervosa to less intensive treatment early in their hospital course. This study identifies prognostic factors clinicians can use in determining the earliest time to transfer an inpatient with anorexia to a day hospital program. ⋯ Inpatients with anorexia nervosa who have the poor prognostic indicators found in this study are in need of continued inpatient care to avoid immediate relapse and higher cost and longer duration of treatment.

The goal of this study was to describe the association between conjugal loss and both syndromal depression and depressive symptoms in a prospective cohort study of people aged 70 years or older. ⋯ Recent bereavement is a significant risk factor for syndromal depression in the elderly. Some widows and widowers experienced high levels of depressive symptoms up to 2 years after the loss of their spouses. Neither demographic variables nor variables concerning the nature of the spouse's death predicted bereavement-related depression.

Patients with schizophrenia are known to be at high risk for suicide attempts and dying by suicide. However, little research has been conducted to determine whether the risk for suicidal behavior is elevated among patients with psychosis in general. ⋯ Rates of suicidal behavior were high across a broad spectrum of patients with psychotic disorders; patients with a history of a current or past major depressive episode (as a part of major depressive disorder or schizoaffective disorder) were at a greater risk for suicide attempts, but patients with schizophrenia, on average, made more medically dangerous attempts. Risk factors for suicidal behavior in patients with psychosis appear to vary compared to those for the general population.
