The initial correction rate (ICR) has been widely used as a predictor for curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing bracing treatment. We proposed a new parameter, the initial Cobb angle reduction velocity (ARV), for prediction of curve progression. The purpose of this study was to identify whether the initial ARV was a more effective predictor than ICR for curve progression in AIS patients undergoing brace treatment, and to evaluate the ideal cut-off point of initial ARV for prediction of curve progression. ⋯ The initial Cobb angle reduction velocity serves as a better predictor for curve progression than initial correction rate in braced AIS patients with follow-up interval of 3-6 months. At the second visit following bracing prescription, those AIS patients with reduction velocity in Cobb angle lower than 10°/year have significantly higher risk of curve progression.

Comparison of the scoliosis curve patterns and MRI syrinx cord characteristics of idiopathic syringomyelia versus Chiari I malformation.
Although the more readily available MR imaging has brought about more incidental findings of idiopathic syringomyelia (IS), no published study has specifically addressed the clinical and imaging features of IS-associated scoliosis. Since IS and Chiari I malformation (CMI)-type syringomyelia are hypothesized to share a common underlying developmental pathomechanism, this study aimed to investigate the scoliosis curve patterns and MRI syrinx cord characteristics of patients with IS comparing with those seen in CMI. ⋯ Radiological characteristics of scoliosis were found to be similar between idiopathic and CMI-type syrinx in both the coronal and sagittal planes, adding further evidence to the concept that these entities may be part of a spectrum of disease sharing a common pathophysiological mechanism. The thoracic spine in IS patients tended to be convex to the deviated side of syrinx, which indirectly supported the likely role of spinal cord dysfunction in the pathogenesis of syrinx-associated spinal deformities.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, with unknown origin. Some studies have noted impaired postural balance in AIS, in particular, difficulty to manage situations with sensory conflict. The motion sickness susceptibility can be secondary to a sensory conflict, for example, between visual and vestibular information. Our hypothesis is: patients with AIS have difficulty in managing situations with sensory conflict and therefore have increased motion sickness susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in AIS subjects by evaluating their susceptibility to motion sickness, as compared to a control group. ⋯ We interpret our results suggesting there is difficulty for patients with AIS to manage situations with sensory conflict. Previous studies focusing on situations with sensory conflict in AIS have required sophisticated technology. They are not accessible for routine patient management. Our research shows the same result with simple, non invasive, low-cost and quick method: B score of motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire.

To examine whether the sacro-femoral-pubic (SFP) angle could estimate pelvic tilt (PT) in scoliotic and normal subjects. ⋯ Unlike two previous reports, the SFP angle correlated poorly to PT in this study, limiting its use as a suitable surrogate for PT in scoliotic and healthy subjects.

The occurrence of spinal epidural haematoma of 'spontaneous' origin in adults is a well-documented entity, though it is rare in children. In the literature to date, there are few cases of this kind of spontaneous haematoma proven to be due to an underlying vascular abnormality. ⋯ These are the first two such cases described with clinico-pathological correlation.
