There are two, principally different ways to obtain patient opinions regarding the outcome of spine surgery: using prospective multi-item questionnaires preoperatively and at follow-up, and using a retrospective single-item question at follow-up-both methods have distinct advantages and limitations. The purpose of the study was to explore the utility of using the simple transition question global assessment, GA, ("How is your back/leg pain today as compared to before the surgery?") as an overall patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) based on the large real-life database in the Swedish spine registry (Swespine). ⋯ The single-item outcome measure global assessment (GA) appears to be a feasible overall patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) and a useful reference for interpreting the scores of patient-reported outcome measures.

To determine the incidence of pseudarthrosis at the osteotomy site after three-column spinal osteotomies (3-COs) with posterior column reconstruction. ⋯ Restoration of the structural integrity of the posterior column in three-column posterior-based osteotomies was associated with > 95% fusion rate at the level of the osteotomy. Pseudarthrosis at other levels was the second most common reason for revision following adjacent segment disease in the long-term follow-up.

Xipho-pubic angle (XPA) correlates with patient's reported outcomes in a population of adult spinal deformity: results from a multi-center cohort study.
Retrospective multi-center cohort study. ⋯ Xipho-pubic angle reflects changes in spinal changes and has strong correlation to HRQoL and spinopelvic parameters. It can discriminate between patients with minimal, moderate, and severe disability as measured by ODI scores. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

Wei et al. evaluated the global research in spine using scientometric methods based on a sample of 13,115 papers published in 5 spine journals from 2004 to 2013. This study builds on this pioneering study and provides up-to-date and thorough information on spine based on a sample of 166,962 papers for the stakeholders. ⋯ The optimal design of research sample made it possible to obtain nearly 13 times the size of the sample in Wei et al. as a true representation of the research in spine through the use of an optimal keyword set for the titles of both papers and 10 spine journals. However, despite the inefficient design of the incentive structures for the relevant stakeholders, the research in spine had expanded 6.8 times since 1980.

To investigate and compare the occurrence of inflammatory processes in the sites of disc degeneration in the lumbar and cervical spine by a gene array and subsequent qPCR and to investigate the mechanistic involvement of transient receptor potential channels TRPC6 and TRPV4. ⋯ This study supports the relevance of IL-6 and IL-8 in disc diseases, but furthermore points toward a possible pathological role of IL-15 and type I interferons, as well as a mechanistic role of TRPC6. With limited differences in the inflammatory profile of cervical and lumbar discs, novel anti-inflammatory or TRP-modulatory strategies for the treatment of disc pathologies may be applicable independent of the spinal region.
