Vertebral endplate lesion (EPL) caused by severe disc degeneration is associated with low back pain. However, there is no suitable animal model to elucidate the pathophysiology of EPL. This study aimed to develop a rat model of EPL and evaluate rat behavior and imaging and histological findings. ⋯ Our rat EPL model showed pain-related behavioral patterns and an increased expression of pain-related neuropeptide. This model could contribute to the study of the pathophysiology of EPL and will help in the treatment of low back pain in the future.

To investigate the association of spinal anomalies with lumbar spondylolysis and spina bifida occulta (SBO). ⋯ These findings indicate that there is a relationship between spinal anomalies and both spondylolysis and SBO, which may lead to elucidation of the mechanism of onset of spondylolysis and improve its treatment and prognosis. Awareness that patients with SBO involving the lumbar spine have an increased likelihood of a spinal anomaly may help to prevent level errors during spinal surgery.

Low back pain (LBP), a widely prevalent and costly disease around the world, is mainly caused by intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IDD). Although numerous factors may trigger this degenerative process, microbiome dysbiosis has recently been implicated as one of the likely causes. However, the exact relationship between the microbiome and IDD is not well understood. This review summarizes the potential mechanisms and discusses microbiome dysbiosis's possible influence on IDD and LBP. ⋯ Diagnostic: individual cross-sectional studies with the consistently applied reference standard and blinding.

The purpose of this study is to assess the accuracy and precision of the smartphone with application and casing (Scolioscreen) compared to the Scoliometer. ⋯ This study confirms the accuracy and precision of the Scolioscreen when measuring the ATR on patients with AIS. Therefore, the Scoliometer can be replaced by the more easily available Scolioscreen which can be used by both physician and parents.

Comparison of four correction techniques for posterior spinal fusion in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
When performing posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), it is of major importance to address both coronal and sagittal deformities. Although several techniques have been described, few data exist comparing them. Our objective was to compare four techniques (in situ bending (ISB), rod derotation (RD), cantilever (C) and posteromedial translation (PMT)) for the correction of spinal deformity in AIS including thoracic deformity. ⋯ The four techniques had the same ability to correct spinal deformity in the coronal plane. Three factors were identified to improve correction rate: implant density, convex compression and use of derotation connectors. On the other hand, PMT was more effective in restoring TK, particularly in hypokyphotic patients.
