C2 stentoplasty: an alternative to conventional vertebroplasty in the treatment of axis metastatic lesions: a systematic review with meta-analysis and case series.
Vertebroplasty has been recently described in the literature as a potential treatment for C2 metastatic lesions. Stentoplasty may represent a safest and equally alternative to the latter. ⋯ A systematic review of the literature demonstrated that C2 vertebroplasty can offer significant pain improvement with a low complication rate. At the same time, this is the first study to describe stentoplasty in a small cohort of patients, as an alternative for the treatment of C2 metastatic lesions in selected cases, offering adequate pain control and improving segmental stability with a high safety profile.

To investigate the role of depressive symptoms on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing spinal surgery up to 2-year follow-up. ⋯ Functional disability and mental health status improve in patients with depression symptoms undergoing spinal surgery. Despite this improvement, they do not reach the values of non-depressed subjects. Over the 2-year follow-up time, patients with depression show a different trajectory of ODI and MCS. Caregivers should be aware of these results to counsel patients with depression symptoms.

Prognostic impact of respiratory dysfunction in elderly patients with cervical spinal cord injury and/or fractures: a multicenter survey.
To investigate the impact of early post-injury respiratory dysfunction for neurological and ambulatory ability recovery in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) and/or fractures. ⋯ Respiratory dysfunction in elderly patients with SCI and/or cervical fracture in the early post-injury period reflects the severity of the condition and may be a useful prognostic predictor.

Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is associated with lower back pain, reduced bone mineral density of the spine. Vascular changes could also affect the already sparsely perfused intervertebral endplate and intervertebral disc. ⋯ This study demonstrates an independent association between AAC and endplate degeneration. These findings expand our knowledge about the degenerative cascade of the lumbar spine and suggest that AAC might be a modifiable risk factor for endplate changes.

To delineate whether use of a PTH analogue in the 1-year peri-operative period improves lumbar bone density. ⋯ The incidence of PTH analogues failing to increase bone density in our series was low at 12%. This study shows that PTH analogues may be a powerful adjunct for increasing bone density and may help to mitigate the risk of mechanical complications in patients undergoing deformity correction with minimally invasive techniques. Future comparative studies are warranted to confirm these latter findings and to potentially protocolize the ideal peri-operative bone health optimization strategy.
