To investigate the external validation and scalability of four predictive models regarding new vertebral fractures following percutaneous vertebroplasty. ⋯ The external validation of four models demonstrated that the predictive model proposed by Zhong et al. in 2016 exhibited superior external generalization capabilities.

To identify the factors associated with a correction of the segmental angle (SA) with a total change greater than 10° in each level following minimally invasive oblique lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-OLIF). ⋯ Preoperative kyphotic SA and facet effusion can predict SA correction >10° following MIS-OLIF. For patients with lordotic SA and no preoperative facet effusion, supplemental procedures, such as anterior column release or posterior osteotomy, should be prepared for additional lumbar lordosis correction required for remnant global sagittal imbalance after MIS-OLIF.

Evaluation of "appropriate use criteria" for surgical decision-making in lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis. A controlled, multicentre, prospective observational study.
Selecting patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS) for surgery is difficult. Appropriate use criteria (AUC) have been developed to clarify the indications for LDS surgery but have not been evaluated in controlled studies. ⋯ A/U patients receiving surgery had the highest chances of achieving MCIC, but the AUC were not able to identify which patients had a greater treatment effect of surgery relative to non-surgical care. The identification of other characteristics that predict a greater treatment effect of surgery, in addition to baseline COMI, is required to improve decision-making.

Several recent studies have reported a possible association between gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration; however, no studies have shown a causal relationship between gut microbiota and disc degeneration. This study was dedicated to investigate the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration and the presence of potentially bacterial traits using two-sample Mendelian randomization. ⋯ This Mendelian Randomization study found a causal effect between 10 gut microbiota and intervertebral disc degeneration, and we summarize the possible mechanisms of action in the context of existing studies. However, additional research is essential to fully understand the contribution of genetic factors to the dynamics of gut microbiota and its impact on disc degeneration.

This study aims to analyse the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the radiological changes of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) on the intervertebral discs and paravertebral muscle to investigate the effect of DM on spinal degeneration. ⋯ Prolonged uncontrolled hyperglycaemia may contribute to lumbar disc degeneration, fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles in the lower lumbar segments, and increased incidence of endplate cartilage pathological changes in patients with degenerative disc disease.
