Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), often found incidentally on lateral lumbar radiographs, is increasingly recognized for its association with adverse outcomes in spine surgery. As a marker of advanced atherosclerosis affecting cardiovascular dynamics, this study evaluates AAC's impact on perioperative blood loss in posterior spinal fusion (PSF). ⋯ This is the first study to identify AAC as an independent predictor of perioperative blood loss in PSF. In addition to its link to degenerative spinal conditions and adverse postoperative outcomes, the relationship between AAC and increased blood loss warrants attention in patients undergoing PSF.

To identify the clinical and radiological outcomes in the coronal and sagittal planes after treatment of congenital complex lumbosacral hemivertebrae (LSHV) with or without posterior concave reconstruction. ⋯ Posterior column reconstruction with insertion of a concave cage may achieve a higher correction rate of large lower lumbar lordosis and lumbosacral coronal deformity, attain better sagittal balance, and have fewer complications related to implant failure than posterior-only hemivertebra resection in patients with congenital LSHV.

Intraoperative fluoroscopy use is essential during spinal fusion procedures. The amount of radiation dose should always be minimized. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of halving the frame rate from 12.5 to 6.25 frames per second (fps) and to quantify the reduction in the risk of developing radiation-induced cancer. ⋯ This study demonstrates the feasibility of setting 6.25 fps for TLIF with and without PLF. By halving the fps, radiation-induced cancer risk could be almost divided by two, without compromising surgical outcome. Finally, after optimization, the risk of developing radiation-induced cancer was less than one in a million.

The aims of this study were to explore the correlations between thoracic kyphosis (TK) and lumbar lordosis (LL) parameters and to build corresponding linear regressions to predict TK morphology and the thoracolumbar inflection point (IP) determined by individual LL parameters in asymptomatic adults. ⋯ There were intimate associations between TK and LL parameters in asymptomatic adults. Moreover, predictive models for thoracic alignment, particularly cumulative TK, based on LL parameters were proposed, which could better delineate anatomical relationships, guide thoracic construction during adult spinal deformity surgery and may help preventing proximal junctional failure.

To evaluate the correlation between dual-energy CT (DECT) virtual calcium free (VNCA), CT attenuation, the ratio and difference of VNCA to CT attenuation, and Pfirrmann grading of lumbar disc degeneration. ⋯ The new quantitative indices R-VH value and D-VH value of DECT have advantages over VNCA value and HU value in evaluating early-stage disc degeneration (≥2 grades, ≥3 grades). The multivariate model IVNCa + CT has the best AUC values for evaluating disc degeneration at all stages.
