Comparison of traditional growth rods and magnetically controlled growing rods in early-onset scoliosis: a case-matched mid term follow-up study.
Early-onset scoliosis (EOS) has always been a challenging situation for spine surgeons. The aim of treatment is to control the direction of curve progression to allow for the complete development of lungs. Among all the growth constructs available, traditional growth rods (TGR) and magnetically controlled growth rods (MCGR) are most widely used. The MCGR has been introduced a few years back and there is a dearth of long-term follow-up studies. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of TGR and MCGR for the treatment of EOS. ⋯ The curve correction was similar in both TGR and MCGR groups. The average T1-S1 length achieved on final follow-up was similar in both groups. The MCGR patients have attained similar correction with fewer invasive procedures and lesser complications compared to the TGR group.

In this study, we investigate the evolution of lumbar fusion surgery with robotic assistance, specifically focusing on the impact of robotic technology on pedicle screw placement and fixation. Utilizing data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) covering 2016 to 2019, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of postoperative outcomes and costs for single-level lumbar fusion surgery. Traditionally, freehand techniques for pedicle screw placement posed risks, leading to the development of robotic-assisted techniques with advantages such as reduced misplacement, increased precision, smaller incisions, and decreased surgeon fatigue. However, conflicting study results regarding the efficacy of robotic assistance in comparison to conventional techniques have prompted the need for a thorough evaluation. With a dataset of 461,965 patients, our aim is to provide insights into the impact of robotic assistance on patient care and healthcare resource utilization. Our primary goal is to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the efficacy of robotic technology in lumbar fusion procedures, offering meaningful insights for optimizing patient-centered care and healthcare resource allocation. ⋯ This is the first big data study on this matter, our study showed that Robotic-assisted lumbar fusion surgery has fewer post-operative complications such as heart failure, acute coronary artery disease, pulmonary edema, venous thromboembolism, and traumatic spinal injury in comparison to conventional methods. Conversely, robotic surgery demonstrated increased post-surgery anemia, blood transfusion and acute kidney injury. Robotic surgery has higher charges compared to non-robotic surgery.

Angioleiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors usually located in the limbs, with anecdotal reports in the spine. We present an atypical case of an epidural spine angioleiomyoma presenting with compressive myelopathy symptoms. The diagnosis was suggested based on MRI findings, and subsequently confirmed histopathologically. ⋯ This is the first known occurrence of pure spinal epidural angioleiomyoma as a source of compressive myelopathy. The imaging presentation, especially the 'dark reticular sign' on MRI, was crucial in suggesting the diagnosis despite the atypical location CONCLUSION: This report serves to raise awareness among clinicians and radiologists about including angioleiomyoma in differential diagnoses for spinal epidural lesions with indicative MRI features. The favorable outcome after surgical intervention underscores the necessity of swift and accurate diagnosis followed by appropriate treatment for such uncommon spinal tumors.

To report the surgical outcome of synovial osteochondromatosis, a rare tumor of the cervical spine, in a 6-year-old boy. ⋯ Synovial osteochondromatosis of the cervical spine in children is rare, and this is the first report of its regrowth after surgery. Synovial osteochondromatosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of pediatric cervical spine tumors.
